Meet Michelle

Head of Business Operations, Defence Digital and Cyber
Airbus Defence and Space
Stevenage, UK

Michelle Kimbrey

What is your current role and where are you based?

I’m based in the UK, Stevenage, with an international team who lead various topics to improve operational excellence, drive sustainable performance and ensure effective governance.

My team is responsible for a large variety of topic such as quality, performance management, transformation, Customer experience, transversal PMO and Enterprise risk management to name a few.

Believe in yourself and go for it!  Nobody is ever 100% fit for a role, we all need space to grow.  Focus on what you bring to the role, rather than what you don’t know yet…

Airbus is a wonderful place for everyone to thrive and be their authentic self.  You have the opportunity to grow with passionate people in a truly inspiring and diverse business.

How long have you been working at Airbus?

I joined in 2001 and am proud to still be part of the Airbus family 23 years later.  I am thankful for my broad experience across our business and functions.

How do you and your team support Airbus customers with digital and cyber resilient solutions?

In an increasingly digital world we are supporting our defence, institutional and internal customers to navigate their growing demands with our end-to-end cyber resilient solutions and products.

My team acts as a trusted business partner to our Customer-facing business delivery teams to support the internal operations, navigate requirements and deliver improvements to safeguard on-quality, on-time, on-cost delivery.

What inspired you to be a part of the aerospace sector?

My background is in Business Management and whilst I have always had a fascination for space (I spent many evenings looking at the moon through my telescope), I never thought there was a career for me as a non-engineer… how wrong I was!

Concerning the beginning of your career path at Airbus - what was the main drive that led you to apply and be part of this company?

Firstly, it was my manager.  He was a fantastic role model and created a safe, yet challenging environment from which to learn, and take accountability.
Secondly, the Rosetta Mission!  The first spacecraft to orbit a comet and land a probe on its surface, after a 10 year journey - it blew my mind!

What do you enjoy the most about your job and what’s the most exciting part of working in the Defence Digital and Cyber division?

100% my colleagues.  It is a privilege to work with such dynamic, fun people who support & encourage each other regardless of national boundaries everyday.

Working in business operations, no one day is the same.  We support the business on such a diverse range of topics, I personally thrive on seeing the impact we make to support challenging situations or make improvements to our business.

Tell us about one of the most memorable experiences from your career at Airbus. What made it so special and unforgettable?

I am proud to be part of the TopWIN network.  A wonderful cohort of talented Women and International professionals who openly share their experiences and insights as well as regular dialogues with leaders from across industry - it is a truly enriching experience.
Airbus has many programmes accessible to employees on a range of diversity & inclusion topics, there really is something for everyone.

What is the most important advice you have been given, and is there any important advice you would like to give?

Believe in yourself.  I’ve been fortunate to have supportive Managers whose belief & trust helped me become the leader I am today.  Your trusted network is crucial for your confidence and well-being so take time to invest in it!

What has been one of the most empowering moments at Airbus?

I find it so rewarding to coach and mentor others to grow and be the best version of themselves.
A recent experience was speaking on a panel about the importance of self-confidence.  The response was overwhelming with many people reaching out for advice, to share their experience or simply to connect.  It is an experience that will stay anchored with me.

What is the most important message  you would like to send out to women considering a career in the aeronautic industry?

Go for it!  Nobody is ever 100% fitting for a role, it would be pointless if you didn’t have space to grow.  Don’t focus on the doubts, but what you will bring.

What are the benefits of working at Airbus?

Our values are at the core of our culture, we celebrate diversity, promote family friendly policies and support people to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

In what way do the values of Airbus relate to your own?

Have Courage & Be Kind

is a mantra I live by; you never know what someone else is going through, physically or with their mental health.
Our Airbus values resonate with that.  We have a speak-up culture and foster an inclusive workplace focussed on respect and wellbeing.

Do you have any hobbies? How do you enjoy spending your free time?

I enjoy time with my family and friends, fitness and getting creative.

Any fun facts you’d like to share?

Early in my career I was entrusted to lead an event that played host to HM Queen Elizabeth II.  Being congratulated by the Queen is one of my proudest moments.
