Airbus Chooses Honeywell for Mobile Assembly Line Powerhouse Operation

Airbus has awarded Honeywell the contract for the powerhouse operation for the A320 Family Assembly Line Airbus is establishing in Mobile, Ala. Honeywell will be responsible for designing, building, operating and maintaining the facility that will supply all utilities to the new assembly line, including power distribution and backup generation, heating, cooling, chilled and drinking water, and sewage handling. The facility also will provide compressed air, and house the building management and fire protection systems for the campus. Construction of the powerhouse is scheduled to begin in the fall.
Headquartered in Golden Valley, Minn., Honeywell’s Building Solutions business unit (HBS) has delivered energy efficiency- and power-focused projects during the past 10 years that are expected to save customers billions in utility and operational costs. The business helps make facilities safe, secure, comfortable and efficient, and has a range of customers — from government buildings and airports to commercial and industrial facilities. HBS has offices across the globe, and the Airbus project will be managed out of its branch in Birmingham, Ala.“After a rigorous competitive process, we’ve reached another major milestone in establishing the A320 assembly line in Mobile,” said Allan McArtor, Chairman-Airbus Americas. “I am confident Honeywell will build a world-class powerhouse facility worthy of a world-class aircraft manufacturing site.”
”As a pioneer in air-transport technologies and leader in building management systems, Honeywell understands what it takes to keep a facility like the Airbus assembly line running efficiently and effectively,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. “Our on-site expertise combined with remote services and support will help deliver the performance Airbus needs to meet its manufacturing and energy-management goals.”
On July 2, 2012, Airbus announced it will establish a manufacturing facility in the United States to assemble and deliver A319, A320 and A321 aircraft. Located at the Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile, it will be the company’s first U.S.-based production facility. The assembly line, which will create jobs and strengthen the aerospace industry, is part of its strategy to enhance Airbus’ global competitiveness by meeting the growing needs of its customers in the United States and elsewhere.
Aircraft assembly is planned to start in 2015, with first deliveries from the Mobile facility beginning in 2016. Airbus anticipates the facility will produce between 40 and 50 aircraft per year by 2018.
