Airbus talks about disabilities with its employees to facilitate inclusion

Understanding differences and sharing best practices to work together

Airbus is taking part in the “European Disability Employment Week” from November 16 to 22. On this occasion, the aircraft manufacturer is organising a series of engaging, interactive awareness-raising workshops on many of its sites in order to share best practices, promote an inclusive mindset and improve the way disabilities are perceived, whether visible or not, in the working environment.

Amongst these activities: 

  • A video clip will be sent to the employees each day describing the situations disabled people are faced with in their professional lives, making it easier for managers and work colleagues to understand better and react appropriately. These videos come with a quiz followed by practical advice for all staff.
  • Theatrical interludes and sketches will immerse the employee-actors in a different working world highlighting the difficulties encountered by people with disabilities.
  • A conference on communicating with the deaf and hard of hearing, and an exhibition on “Disability and Innovation” will be held in the presence of two inventors, one of a bionic hand and the other of a system for assisting communication by “eye-tracking”.
  • Furthermore, to complete these activities, in partnership with the "Les Bouchons d'Amour" association, Airbus employees have collected plastic bottle stoppers (more than 1,000 kg collected in 8 months). The proceeds of the sale of these stoppers will be entirely donated to associations to help them organise actions in favour of the disabled.

“We will make the most of this week to raise our employees’ awareness and to provide them with information,” declared Thierry Baril, Chief Human Resources Officer Airbus Group & Airbus. Because acknowledging, respecting and appreciating the wealth of individual differences means contributing to creating an open culture and encouraging professional development and the blossoming of talents.

Besides the numerous awareness-raising actions around disability that have been put in place with the company’s employees, Airbus is keen to develop the skills of its disabled staff to facilitate their career progression. Furthermore, special workstation arrangements and ways to improve accessibility are being carried out to maintain its disabled employees in employment. In parallel, Airbus is increasing the amount of work it subcontracts out to the disability enterprise sector which represented some 16 million euros’ worth of purchases for Airbus in France in 2014.

Airbus was one of the first companies to sign the diversity charter in France in 2004. The company strengthened its commitments in 2011 by signing its first three-year agreement for each of its entities in France with all of the representative union organisations, with a view to promoting the employment and integration of people with a disability. In 2014, Airbus renewed this agreement, adding a chapter on integrating and maintaining disabled people in employment.
