A new dimension to city planning

Infrastructure is a critical need for scaling urban air mobility operations in cities. Airbus Urban Mobility is actively exploring how urban air mobility can bring an added mobility solution to a city’s existing infrastructure network for the benefit of its citizens, including what additional infrastructure is required.

Supporting sustainable & efficient urban development

Contributing to urban mobility requires a holistic understanding of the urban context. This includes adherence to the practice of territorial development and planning, which can help to enable sustainable and efficient urban development globally. At Airbus Urban Mobility, we fully adhere to these principles: our urban design and planning team works with world-leading experts to develop infrastructure solutions that seamlessly integrate new mobility systems into the existing urban transport network. This collaborative approach ensures our urban air mobility solutions can serve the greater needs of the broader population.

Since 2017, MVRDV has been a part of a study led by Airbus Urban Mobility to envisage the future of urban air mobility using self-piloted, zero-emission, electric air vehicles. The study focuses on the implementation of this technology at an urban level, as well as its impacts and potential benefits for cities.

Enhancing the value of existing transport infrastructure

To achieve our vision of an urban environment that seamlessly integrates urban air mobility solutions, we work to:

  • Design and certify vertipads—necessary for vehicle take-off and landing—that integrate positively with existing urban infrastructure
  • Develop digital infrastructure solutions that help public bodies to leverage digital technologies in developing and managing their smart cities
  • Create solutions that adhere to the principles of Functional Compactness, which aims to enhance the value of existing transport infrastructure and adapt its use for future mobility evolutions
  • Support a broader urban planning capability that relies on extensive collaboration with local ecosystems that build and live in the urban context
  • Monitor and safeguard the effective use of existing urban infrastructure to better serve urban transportation development
