With the return of the FIDAE airshow to Santiago, Chile, the Airbus C295 is one more time in the spotlight, being the regional workhorse in support of the population. A total of 41 aircraft operated by six nations serve the region. This versatile aircraft has shown itself to be much more than just a military transport, operating in support of regional security, humanitarian relief and environmental protection.

In Latin America's challenging environments, where aircraft must transition from the humid Amazonian basin to the thin air of the Andes, reliability is essential. The Airbus C295 medium tactical transport aircraft has become an invaluable asset to the region’s air forces, providing multi-role capabilities that can adapt as quickly as mission requirements change.

Brazil: From the Amazon to the Antarctic

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) operates a fleet of 15 C295s, locally designated as the C-105/SC-105 Amazonas. The aircraft have proven indispensable in some of the world’s most demanding environments.

In March 2026, a C-105 Amazonas performed its first aerial cargo drop in Antarctica, marking a historic milestone. Delivering 1,200 kg of essential supplies to Comandante Ferraz Station as part of the PROANTAR programme, the aircraft demonstrated its ability to deliver supplies with precision in extreme polar conditions.

Closer to home, the SC-105 variant remains the backbone of Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. In July and August 2025, the FAB deployed the aircraft for coastal surveillance off the coasts of Espírito Santo and São Paulo monitoring vessels in distress. Even in adverse weather conditions, the aircraft's advanced sensors enabled coordinated maritime monitoring. Furthermore, the fleet's speed and range were vital for organ transport missions throughout 2025, ensuring that life-saving deliveries reached hospitals across the vast Brazilian territory in time.

The C-105’s versatility was also evident during the 2024 Brazilian elections, when it helped to ensure voting rights in remote regions of the Amazon. The C295 was used to transport ballots, personnel, and other essential materials, thereby supporting logistical efforts in isolated areas.

The Brazilian Air Force’s C295s also support the delivery of critical medical supplies and operations targeting illegal mining activities in the same Amazon region.

Colombia: Protecting people and biodiversity

The Colombian Air Force's (FAC) fleet of six C295 aircraft carries out missions that support social and environmental stability. In the violence-stricken Catatumbo region, the C295 became a beacon of hope in early 2025, delivering over 200 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including food, hygiene kits and blankets, to displaced populations.

The aircraft's Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) performance is critical for reaching remote regions such as Guainía. In September 2025, a C295 landed on an unprepared airstrip in San Felipe to deliver ten tonnes of emergency aid — a feat that would have been impossible for larger strategic airlifters. The FAC also uses the C295 to support the local economy. In mid-2025, for example, the aircraft transported over 5,500 kg of cacao to Bogotá, providing farmers in isolated regions with a vital link to national markets.

Perhaps most uniquely of all, the C295 is a guardian of Colombia’s biodiversity. Between 2023 and 2025, the FAC conducted 26 missions specifically to transport and release hundreds of animals, collaborating with conservation organisations to safeguard the nation's natural heritage.

In June 2023, a Colombian Air Force C295 acted as an air ambulance during Operación Esperanza to evacuate the four children missing for 40 days in the Colombian jungle and transport them to a hospital in Bogota. The pilot landed with night-vision goggles on an unprepared runway.

Over the years, the C295 has evolved to incorporate modifications such as modernised avionics featuring touch screens, as well as winglets, extensions at the tips of the aircraft’s wings designed to improve performance and reduce fuel consumption.

Chile and Ecuador: Guardians of the coast and islands

With three C295s in its fleet, the Chilean Navy's P-295 Persuader Maritime Patrol variant acts as a cutting-edge sentinel. During the SUBSAR 2025 exercise, the aircraft led submarine search and rescue operations, showcasing its effectiveness in complex maritime surveillance scenarios.

However, its most vital role often occurs during the summer months. In February 2025, the C295, equipped with infrared sensors, supported the response to wildfires in southern Chile. By conducting day-and-night reconnaissance, it detected hotspots in real time, acting as a 'command-and-control' platform to guide ground crews and firefighting aircraft through thick smoke and high-risk environments.

Ecuador’s three C295s have played a valuable role as a flying hospital. In March 2026, the Ecuadorian Air Force used the aircraft's emergency medical services configuration to evacuate critically ill patients from the Galápagos Islands to the mainland. The C295's ability to reduce transit time for emergencies literally saves lives in island communities.

From materials and spare parts to training and technical support, the Airbus Services organisation gives support to a total of 110 Airbus Defence and Space military aircraft operational in the region, including the C295 and its predecessors the C212 and CN235.

The C295's ability to change from one transport configuration to another in less than an hour enables it to provide rapid support for medical evacuations, the delivery of humanitarian aid and firefighting operations.

Mexico: Rapid response and national presence

The Mexican Air Force and Navy rely on the C295 for its rapid deployment capabilities. While the aircraft is a symbol of national pride, as demonstrated by its formation flight during the 2025 Independence Day parade, it is during disaster relief operations that its true value is seen. In October 2025, for example, when severe flooding hit Veracruz, two C295s immediately established an air bridge from Santa Lucía, delivering food kits and thousands of litres of water to the heart of the disaster zone within hours.

The C295: always on duty

The Airbus C295 has evolved into an essential asset across Latin America. From fighting fires in Chile to delivering aid in Colombia, the aircraft is the most reliable partner for the region's air forces.

The C295 is the global leader in its segment, holding 85% of the market share with a total of 331 orders from 39 countries across four continents. To date, the global C295 fleet has achieved 730,000 flight hours.
