When a rare hantavirus hit the remote island of Tristan da Cunha in May 2026, UK troops and the Airbus A400M were ready. Join us as we revisit the daring mission and explore the critical role this aircraft plays for the Royal Air Force.
Tristan da Cunha: Situated deep in the South Atlantic Ocean, it is widely recognised as the most remote inhabited island on Earth. Home to around 220 people, the British overseas territory is roughly 10,000 kilometres away from the United Kingdom. It is a place of beautiful isolation.
In early May 2026, it became the setting for a particularly daring mission by the 16 Air Assault Brigade and the Royal Air Force (RAF), when a sudden medical crisis struck. An islander came down with a suspected case of hantavirus two weeks after disembarking from the cruise ship MV Hondius at the South Atlantic island.
Time was strictly of the essence, as medical oxygen and other supplies were soon running low at the island’s small hospital. As Tristan da Cunha has no airstrip and given the critical nature of the situation, an airborne intervention emerged as the only viable option.

Preparing the A400M
RAF Brize Norton was ready to immediately respond. An Airbus A400M Atlas was swiftly prepared for the long-range mission. The pilots planned a 6,788-kilometre route south to Ascension Island. From there, it was another 3,000 kilometres to Tristan da Cunha. The A400M did not undertake this journey alone. A key partner in this operation was the Airbus A330 MRTT Voyager, which refuelled the A400M in mid-air to ensure no time was lost.
“The two things that leap out are obviously the challenge of geography – how far away it is from Brize – and then you've got the challenges of the island itself. It’s a small volcanic island so the topography is a challenge. The weather factor is a challenge. It's surrounded by the sea that is all-consuming."

The plan was to air drop the critical oxygen and medical supplies in several batches, while an expert team parachuted onto the island. The team consisted of eight personnel: six paratroopers and two military clinicians — an RAF anaesthetist and an Army nurse from 16 Medical Regiment — to support local medical staff. It marked the first time the UK military had parachuted in medical personnel to provide emergency aid.
Executing the drop was a perilous task given that the island is notorious for its unpredictable and unforgiving weather. Wind speeds often exceed 25 mph, making this high-stakes parachute insertion extremely risky. In addition, the island is a very small target to hit. Despite these challenging conditions, the crew achieved pinpoint precision. “Standing on the ramp was obviously nerve-wracking, but I had every faith in the pathfinders that were jumping us in,” recalls Wing Commander Toby, the anaesthetist who parachuted down in tandem with an experienced paratrooper.
Always ready to deliver
The emergency response to Tristan da Cunha is just one of many notable entries in the RAF's growing logbook of vital A400M deployments. In recent years, the aircraft has been part of two critical evacuation missions. In 2021, it was involved in the withdrawal from Kabul during Operation Pitting, and two years later it evacuated British nationals from Sudan. In both of these high-stakes operations, the A400M flew non-stop extraction routes.

Beyond conflict zones, the aircraft has cemented its reputation as a vital lifeline when disaster strikes. With a payload capacity of up to 37 tonnes and the ability to land on short, unpaved runways, it can deliver food, water, medical supplies, and equipment directly to disaster zones. This proved vital when hurricanes struck the Caribbean in 2017, and when earthquakes hit Syria, Turkey and Morocco in 2023.
The A400M plays a key role in the RAF's rapid response missions all around the world. In July 2023, its capabilities were tested to the absolute limit in the run up to Exercise Mobility Guardian. An RAF A400M set a new record by flying non-stop from RAF Brize Norton to the Pacific island of Guam, the longest flight for this aircraft type. Supported by three in-flight refuelling operations from A330 MRTT Voyagers, the crew completed a gruelling journey of over 20 hours.

Since the first A400M Atlas entered service with the RAF in November 2014, the aircraft has firmly established itself as a reliable workhorse. It transports personnel and critical cargo across vast distances and facilitates advanced tactical operations, including precision paratrooper insertions and complex air drops. Today, the RAF's A400M fleet consists of 22 aircraft.

Going forward, the A400M will only continue to develop, with several new features on the agenda. For example, the A400M could soon carry drones into battle. A corresponding mother ship capability is in development. Recent tests also demonstrated the A400M's potential as a firefighting aircraft, capable of discharging up to 20,000 liters of water or retardant using a kit that can be rolled on and off the aircraft.
From day one, Airbus and the RAF have collaborated closely on the A400M Atlas, ensuring the fleet's availability for today's missions while also preparing the aircraft for future requirements. While the aircraft has already served the UK for twelve years, many more chapters in its story are yet to be written — and will be for decades to come.
