Commercial Aircraft impact in Spain
As one of Airbus’ four founding nations, Spain is home to three major production facilities for commercial aircraft.
Indeed, Airbus Commercial Aircraft’s activities in Spain are key to securing Airbus' position as a leader in commercial aviation, supporting the company’s production ramp-up across all aircraft programmes.
Its industrial set-up and experience gained over more than a century, since the beginnings of CASA, enable Airbus Commercial Aircraft in Spain to manufacture and deliver highly integrated components to the company’s final assembly lines.
Today, Airbus Commercial Aircraft in Spain employs around 4,000 people. It is responsible for the rear fuselage and empennage (tail assembly) of Airbus commercial aircraft programmes, and specialises in large carbon-fibre surfaces. State-of-the-art components are manufactured using highly digitised and automated processes.
Airbus Commercial Aircraft in Spain contributes to the goal of leading the decarbonisation of aviation and is working on technological developments central to preparing the next generation of passenger aircraft. These include research into new materials as well as electrification and other alternative energy sources

Airbus leads an ecosystem of change across Spanish industry, with concrete initiatives such as the Spanish Alliance for the Sustainability in Air Transport or collaborations with other key actors for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development.
Each of the three sites in Spain contributes to Airbus’ sustainability roadmap through initiatives that enable a better workplace and reduce the environmental impact of production.
Getafe
Founded in 1923. The headquarters of Airbus in Spain and a benchmark in aircraft structural assembly and equipment. A leader in industrial automation processes.
This is where the horizontal tailplanes (HTPs) for the A320, A330, and A350 families are assembled and equipped, as well as the A350 rear fuselage (section 19). The components are flown from Getafe to the final assembly line inside the BelugaXL.
Illescas
Founded in 1990. Airbus’ composite materials centre of excellence. The wing lower covers and section 19 of the A350, the main deck cargo door of the A350F, and part of the HTPs for the A320 and A330 are all manufactured here.
Illescas is a world leader in the manufacturing of aeronautical components in composite materials, specialising in complex and large elements.
The factory stands out for its high degree of automation, with manufacturing processes based on state-of-the-art technologies that reflect a commitment to innovation and a clear direction towards predictive production systems, through pioneering work in data analysis and digitisation.
Cádiz
Founded in 1928. This site concentrates the know-how, technologies, and industrial excellence demonstrated over almost 100 years. The Cádiz plant contributes to Airbus Commercial Aviation and Airbus Defence & Space programmes. It manufactures parts of the HTPs for the A320, A330, and A350, as well as A320neo fan cowls.
The Cadiz site holds a leading position in the supply of highly integrated components, automation and digitisation of processes. Cádiz is also a benchmark in manufacturing with composite materials, superplastic forming, metallic solutions and automated assembly. The site stands out for the development and integration of lightweight robots in production processes.

How is Airbus Spain contributing to future aviation?
Airbus has a clear roadmap to lead the decarbonisation of aerospace. This involves working on different pillars such as fleet renewal, the development of new fuels including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or hydrogen, and the development of a next generation of aircraft.
In Spain, Airbus is focused on technological developments aimed at increasing aircraft efficiency and preparing the next generation of passenger aircraft.
SAF: The next generation of single-aisle aircraft will be able to fly with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Technology bricks: Airbus also aims to make radical changes in propulsion methods, wings, systems, and materials.
Fuel efficiency: These advances are expected to make this future aircraft between 20% and 30% more fuel-efficient than the current A320 Family.
Lighter materials: The company is moving towards increasingly lighter materials.
Propulsion methods: Airbus is evaluating efficient solutions, such as the open fan engine.
Electrification: Progress is being made towards increasing aircraft electrification , using latest-generation batteries to enable hybrid architectures. For instance, at Getafe, Airbus is studying the use of electrical energy to power various non-propulsive aircraft systems.
What is Airbus Spain for the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)?
At Airbus we are advancing technically so that all our aircraft are 100% SAF-compatible by 2030, while fostering the readiness of the SAF ecosystem through partnerships and supporting the development of consistent regulatory frameworks.
Airbus Spain is part of associations and working groups as AST or Crecemos to foster the deployment of SAF.
