Commercial Aircraft in Spain

Yes. Spain is responsible for the rear fuselage and empennage of Airbus commercial aircraft, as well as large composite surfaces. It manufactures major components for the A320, A330, and A350 programmes that are later integrated into the final assembly lines.

Airbus has three production facilities for commercial aircraft activities in Spain. These are located in Getafe, Illescas and Cádiz.

Airbus manufactures horizontal stabilisers for A320, A330, A350 and A350F, rear fuselage (section 19) for the A350 and A350F, fan cowls for A320, wing lower covers for A350 and A350F and main deck cargo door for the A350F.

Airbus in Spain specialises in manufacturing large and complex surfaces using composite technologies. Its facility located in Illescas is a centre of excellence in composite manufacturing. Here, Airbus manufactures the rear fuselage (section 19) and wing lower covers for the A350 and A350F, and the main deck cargo door for the A350F.

Airbus has a clear roadmap to lead the  decarbonisation of aerospace. This  involves working on different pillars such as fleet renewal, the development of new fuels  including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or hydrogen, and the development of a next generation of  aircraft.

In Spain, Airbus is focused on technological developments aimed at increasing aircraft efficiency and preparing the next generation of  passenger aircraft. 

SAF: The next generation of single-aisle aircraft will be able to fly with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Technology bricks: Airbus also aims to make radical changes in propulsion methods, wings, systems, and materials.

Fuel efficiency: These advances are expected to make this future aircraft between 20% and 30% more fuel-efficient than the current A320 Family.

Lighter materials: The company is moving towards increasingly lighter materials. 

Propulsion methods: Airbus is evaluating  efficient solutions, such as the open fan engine.

Electrification: Progress is being made towards  increasing aircraft electrification , using latest-generation batteries to enable hybrid architectures. For instance, at Getafe, Airbus is studying the use of electrical energy to power various non-propulsive aircraft systems.

• At Airbus we are advancing technically so that all our aircraft are 100% SAF-compatible by 2030, while fostering the readiness of the SAF ecosystem through partnerships and supporting the development of consistent regulatory frameworks. 

• Airbus  Spain is part of  associations and working groups as AST or Crecemos to foster the deployment of SAF.
