Commercial Aircraft in Africa

Our products & services

This year marks 50 years of Airbus flying in Africa, a half-century defined not just by milestones but by a shared history and an unwavering commitment to the continent’s future. Since our journey began, we have worked hand-in-hand with African partners to forge connections that empower economies and bridge horizons.

Over the decades, Africa’s aviation sector has undergone a profound transformation, highlighted by the creation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and the large-scale modernisation of fleets. Today, nearly 40 airlines operate more than 300 Airbus aircraft, choosing the industry’s most technologically advanced solutions, ranging from the versatile A220 to the flagship A350-1000, to drive regional mobility.

Our presence is more than operational; it is a deep-rooted partnership. Through strategic support hubs in Johannesburg, Tunis, and Cairo, and industrial centres in Morocco and Tunisia, we are investing in local talent and infrastructure. As we look toward the next 50 years, Airbus remains dedicated to scaling the African aviation ecosystem, ensuring a future that is innovative, sustainable, and rooted in the enduring spirit of our partnership.

Space in Africa

Our products & services

Airbus delivers Earth observation satellite capabilities and services across Africa, supporting governments including the South African National Space Agency and enabling crucial communications (Nilesat, ALSAT 2A/2B).

Airbus was the prime contractor for Morocco’s MOHAMMED VI-A/B satellites. The company also established a virtual space data centre in Namibia for geo-intelligence.

Airbus partners with the CCF, using Pléiades Neo imagery to combat deforestation and protect wildlife.

Made in Africa

Airbus’ inclusive approach to commercial and industrial opportunities is founded on collaboration. This has led to the establishment of mutually beneficial, long-term public and private sector partnerships.

Today, Airbus' supply chain in Africa includes more than 200 direct or indirect suppliers for products and services that range from design engineering to the manufacturing of aero-structures, components and composites.

In both Morocco and Tunisia, Airbus suppliers and the Airbus subsidiary Airbus Atlantic (previously known as STELIA Aerospace) rely on a highly skilled workforce. They take advantage of the geographical proximity to Europe to source a mix of machined composite, electrical and assembled components for all Airbus programmes.

South Africa’s aerospace industry is a major supplier of parts, components and sub-assemblies across the Airbus product range.
