Fifty years is more than a milestone; it is a shared history. When Airbus first began its journey on the continent half a century ago, the ambition was to forge connections that empower economies.
Gabriel Semelas, President of Airbus in Africa and the Middle East, underscores this evolution: “Africa is at the heart of global aerospace opportunities. Our commitment across the Continent is a reflection of our shared ambition: to scale the entire civil aviation ecosystem by leveraging its local talents and existing infrastructure, thereby strengthening Africa’s aviation industry, its network and also contributing to the local economies, now and for decades to come.”
Anchoring Africa in global aviation
Five decades ago, our fundamental commitment was to provide modern, efficient aircraft to the Continent's growing carriers, thereby enabling vital connectivity and driving economic growth. Today, this foundational role sees more than 300 Airbus aircraft serving as essential links for nearly 40 airlines, facilitating trade and mobility that unite people and drive regional economies.
Spanning the continent from Algeria to South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire to Ethiopia, operators are flying Airbus fleets—ranging from the A220 to the A350-1000—to strengthen regional ties and bridge connections with the rest of the world.
This dedication is unfolding against a backdrop of extraordinary promise. Today, Africa is home to 1.5 billion people, a vibrant population poised to grow by another 690 million by 2044. This demographic energy is the heartbeat of the Continent’s future, fueling an air traffic volume expected to triple over the next two decades. According to Airbus’ latest Global Market Forecast, this surge in connectivity will require more than 1,500 additional aircraft—a testament to Africa’s soaring potential and our shared journey toward new horizons.
This crucial operational presence is consistently sustained by our dedicated support teams in strategic locations including Johannesburg, Tunis, and Cairo.
The opening of a Customer Support Centre in Johannesburg in 2025 further underlines this commitment. As Nam Bin Hoang, Airbus Country Representative in South Africa, remarked, "Being as close as possible to our customers, supporting them, and advising them is in Airbus' DNA".
Additionally, we are working in close collaboration with maintenance and repair partners such as Ethiopian MRO, Air Algérie Technics, Tunisair Technics, Aerotechnic Industries in Morocco, EgyptAir Maintenance & Engineering and SAA Technical.
Beyond sales and support, we actively seek to offer strategic financing solutions to enable continuous growth without undue financial risk. Hadi Akoum, Vice President Sales for Airbus in Africa, notes that "Airbus is expanding the use of mixed financing models that combine leasing, export credit and, where possible, local banking participation". This strong commercial bedrock and unwavering customer support are complemented by our growing industrial footprint across the continent.
Investing in people
The true investment in the enduring future of Africa soars through industrial transformation. Our advanced Airbus Atlantic manufacturing centres in Casablanca and Tunis are not just production hubs; they are incubators of aerospace expertise, powered by approximately 3,000 dedicated professionals representing 12 different nations. These sites, alongside a growing network of 400 local suppliers are the foundation of a robust, local ecosystem designed to establish African expertise as synonymous with global aerospace excellence.
The true measure of this commitment is found in the lives it touches beyond the factory, specifically through our investment in developing the next generation of African aerospace leaders. We are directly cultivating the pilots of tomorrow through strategic partnerships like the one with The Aviator Institute in Tunisia. This crucial pipeline of talent is essential, as the Airbus Global Services Forecast (GSF) anticipates a need for 20,000 new pilots, 30,000 new mechanics, and 21,000 cabin crew across the continent over the next 20 years.
This engagement extends to social empowerment, evidenced by our support for the Solio project in Kenya, which fosters the independence of local women by equipping them with practical vocational skills that can improve their livelihoods for the long term. We also help bridge the digital divide by equipping students in Ethiopia and Morocco with computer labs, enabling them to engage with the digital world and acquire essential skills that can increase their future opportunities.
Protecting natural heritage, charting the future
Our commitment to Africa extends far beyond the delivery of aircraft; it is a bond defined by our shared responsibility to the continent's sustainable growth and resilience. When crises strike, the Airbus Foundation steps forward, enabling life saving aid to reach communities in crisis. Since 2011, the Foundation has mobilised its resources to support humanitarian partners in 24 countries, coordinating 78 humanitarian missions that have delivered over 1,200 tonnes of medical supplies and relief - our aircraft and helicopters reaching the unreachable when every second counts.
Furthermore, we leverage our unique perspective from the sky to support conservation efforts within the continent. By supplying over 125,000 km² of high-resolution satellite imagery, we empower local guardians to monitor wildlife - from mapping elephant corridors in Namibia to monitoring and protecting Ethiopian wolf habitats; drive the restoration of precious habitats, and anticipate environmental risks before they strike. This advanced technology is a crucial tool for long-term resilience, and safeguarding the environment for the future generations who will inherit it.
"The Airbus Foundation is the philanthropic cornerstone of Airbus’ social value mission to help build secure, resilient and thriving communities. We put Airbus’ products to work - from relief flights to satellite imagery - for the benefit of our partners and the lives and ecosystems that they aim to strengthen. We embed a collaborative approach and co-create solutions with key stakeholders that respond to community needs”. Hania Tabet, Airbus Head of Social Value and Managing Director of the Airbus Foundation.
As we honour this half-century of collaboration, our vision charts a course toward new horizons. Our journey continues to expand into crucial new dimensions, from pioneering sustainable flight initiatives to developing advanced space and defense solutions that strengthen national safety and sovereignty. Driven by the profound successes we have built together, Airbus remains fully committed to a future for Africa that is more innovative, more sustainable, and always rooted in the enduring spirit of our partnership.
