Meet Samy

A220 Electrical Assembler
Airbus
Mirabel, Canada

Our aircraft, our people. Today with Samy in Mirabel.

For me, Airbus is first and foremost a father-son story. My father has been an aircraft mechanic for nearly 40 years, and today he works at the FAL in Mirabel too. I had started studying finance, but decided  to retrain following many discussions with my father. He certainly passed on his passion for aeronautics to me!

What is your role at Airbus?

I have been an electrical assembler on the A220 final assembly line (FAL) for a year, working the evening shift. I work on cables, grouped into harnesses, which must be unrolled, connected and installed in many places in the aircraft to ensure electrical transmission and circuit safety during flight . My role is to check each harness before installation, fit the clamps that hold the harness to the structure, then route them, put them in place and check them again. There are hundreds of harnesses in an aircraft, and their number keeps on growing with the increase in in-flight entertainment options. Quality and safety are essential. When I arrive at work, I know what I have to do because we have written manufacturing processes that guide us, and I like that.

What attracted you to joining Airbus?

For me, Airbus is first and foremost a father-son story. My father has been an aircraft mechanic for nearly 40 years, and today he works at the FAL in Mirabel too. I had started studying finance, but decided to retrain following many discussions with my father. He certainly passed on his passion for aeronautics to me! And Airbus is also a big family through colleagues who have become friends. We are a close-knit team. I learn from the “old hands”, who pass on their knowledge, for example by helping me understand changes made by the Design Office or the Methods department. I think it’s a great way to improve ways of working. Thanks to them, I save time every day, and today I too am helping to develop this network of mutual aid and exchanges between colleagues. We know each other so well that I even receive life advice! (laughs).

What is the best advice you have received?

Take your time and don't stress! Stress can lead to mistakes, to being less vigilant about our surroundings, and ultimately, it can put our colleagues in danger because we haven't put the right safety procedures in place. What I like here is the speak-up culture. I feel free to ask questions to understand why I made a mistake and avoid making it again. We try to solve problems together to constantly improve.

Which Airbus values do you feel close to?

Customer focus! We hold our customers’ aircraft in our hands and each of us represents Airbus. When we receive visits from customer representatives, I like to take the time to answer their questions, talk with them about their aircraft and explain my work. These discussions are a source of pride and a sign of trust. And I also fly on Airbuses. Quality, safety and reliability are essential!

What is your favorite aircraft?

The Beluga! Now that we’ve joined the Airbus family, we have more opportunities to see it, even if it’s rare. Last March, I was lucky enough to see it at Mirabel airport. It was returning from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where it had delivered a satellite. On its way back to France after its mission, it stopped briefly on the Mirabel runways to refuel before taking off again. And I was there! I’m proud to be part of this great Airbus family!
