Ten years of “building great things together” in Mobile, Alabama
The Airbus Engineering Center in Mobile, Alabama has celebrated 10 years of operation since its January 2007 opening, a commitment that expanded Airbus’ U.S. footprint and served as a precursor to construction of the nearby A320 Family jetliner final assembly line – the company’s first production site in America.
Exceeding Airbus’ initial promise of housing 150 engineers at the Airbus Engineering Center, this facility on the U.S. southern gulf coast is now home to 220 engineers and support staff. Its initial focus on cabin engineering and A350 XWB design work has expanded, today involving activity on nearly all of Airbus’ commercial aircraft products.
“We are proud of our partnership with Alabama and Mobile, and are grateful for the enthusiastic welcome we have received over the past decade,” said Barry Eccleston, CEO-Airbus Americas, Inc. “We’re building great things together, with our employees and their families becoming a vital part of the community where they live and work.”
The Airbus Engineering Center is located on the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, which also has become home to the $600-million, 53-acre final assembly line for A320-series jetliners – officially called the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility.
According to David Trent, who has been the Airbus Engineering Center’s Site Director from the beginning in 2007, the operation’s success is “a result of good people who came with a shared mission to build something from the ground up, and who now work hard every day to make Airbus a leading aircraft manufacturer.”
As part of the Airbus Engineering Center’s 10-year anniversary celebration, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson read a proclamation naming January 30, 2017 as “Airbus Engineering Day” in the city.
