Sir Arnold Hall was a distinguished English aeronautical engineer, scientist, and industrialist, born in Liverpool. After graduating from Cambridge University, where he earned several aeronautics and engineering prizes, Hall began his career by contributing to early jet propulsion, working on compressor stress calculations for Frank Whittle's pioneering jet engine in 1937. He spent most of World War II serving at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), Farnborough.

Following the war, he entered academia, becoming the Professor of Aviation at the Imperial College of Science and Technology. Hall returned to the RAE in a leadership role in 1951 when he was appointed its director. In a career-defining moment, the British government tasked him with leading the investigation into the catastrophic in-flight failures of the De Havilland Comet 1, the world's first commercial jetliner. Hall's meticulous and rigorous investigative work subsequently established the model for major aviation accident investigations worldwide.

In 1955, Hall moved into the private sector, joining the Engines division of Hawker Siddeley. His rise was swift, and by 1967, he had been appointed Chairman and Managing Director of the entire Hawker Siddeley Group. Crucially, when the UK government officially withdrew from the nascent Airbus A300 program in April 1969, Hall was instrumental in ensuring Hawker Siddeley remained involved. He kept the company onboard in a private capacity as an "associate" partner responsible for supplying the A300's wings—a decision that cemented the UK’s contribution to the success of Airbus.

Hall left the aircraft industry in 1977 following the government's decision to nationalize Hawker Siddeley, merging it with BAC and Scottish Aviation to form British Aerospace. After leaving the corporate world, Sir Arnold Hall dedicated himself to public service, becoming a committed advocate for improving technical education and promoting the sciences. He died on January 9, 2000, at the age of 84.
