Meet Raphaël

Leader and Designer UFT 3D Printing Pole
Airbus Helicopters
Marignane, France

What is your name, job title, and where are you based?

My name is Raphael Criado. I am a manager and designer of the UFT 3D Printing Pole at the Airbus Helicopter tooling design office in Marignane, France.

Define your job title in one sentence

My role is to gather operational needs for tooling and protection on production lines. I design these custom solutions using 3D design software. Then comes the mass production of the parts using 3D printing to quickly meet the needs. This approach guarantees relevance and efficiency within a rigorous industrial framework.

What’s one thing that makes your job exciting or special?

My professional career makes me proud to practice this profession. I was French Champion 2023 and Vice Champion 2024 in Additive Manufacturing at the Worldskills competition and I continue to flourish in this field. I would also say that the ability to go from a digital model to a physical one in a very short time makes this production method simply fabulous and industrial.

What inspired you to join Airbus?

Joining Airbus was a unique opportunity, made possible in part by the recognition of my skills during the Worldskills competition. I have always had a passion for performance and innovation and I believe that Airbus Helicopters embodies this spirit perfectly.

Is there something that surprised you about working for Airbus?

During my first visit to Airbus, I was particularly impressed by the helicopter production lines. They revealed the complexity and diversity of the components required for their assembly: machined parts, sheet metal elements, composite structures, and more. I also noticed the presence of numerous tools, some of which were specifically made using 3D printing.

Explain what you do in simple terms

My job is to propose solutions to meet the operational needs of production lines. For example, an operator may need specific tools to protect a structural element during a drilling operation. We identify their needs, analyse the problem and propose a customised solution that exploits the full potential of additive manufacturing.

How does your role contribute to Airbus’ mission or the success of its products?

Within Airbus Helicopters' manufacturing operations, my role is directly linked to the improvement of our industrial processes. I identify specific needs in the field and quickly transform these challenges into industrial solutions. This ability to innovate and adapt quickly significantly improves the efficiency of our assemblies and the quality of our helicopters, thus contributing to Airbus' operational excellence and competitiveness in the global market.

How has Airbus supported your career growth or personal development?

I have really been able to develop professionally at Airbus.. I manage the "Ultra Fast Tooling" team of 4 people. This responsibility, combined with the rich daily interaction with our internal customers on the production lines, and the various service experts (Sheet Metal, Composites, etc.), constitutes a constant source of development of my technical, operational, and leadership skills.

How has your career evolved since you joined Airbus?

Initially working as a temporary employee in Airbus' Additive Manufacturing department, I seized the opportunity to demonstrate and directly apply the skills acquired during my academic studies and previous experience. I was actively involved in improving production reliability by identifying optimal machine parameters and contributing to the establishment of effective management systems to concretely improve processes in this new field.

What’s your most memorable experience at Airbus? Why does it stand out?

My most memorable experience at Airbus was meeting with the group's most senior executives. I had the unique opportunity to present to them a major solution from our Ultra Fast Tooling service. This moment highlighted the direct contribution our work makes to Airbus's agility.

Is there a specific project or moment you’re particularly proud of? Why?

My greatest pride at Airbus is the industrialisation of the 'Ultra Fast Tooling' service, a success we have been building day by day with my team, thanks to the support of our management.
