Meet Phatcharaphon

Mechanical Aircraft Maintenance Technician
Airbus Helicopters
Japan

What is your name, job title, and where are you based?

My name is Phatcharaphon Praipruk and I work with the MRO & Completion department at Airbus Helicopters Japan in Kobe. As a member of the Light Maintenance team, I take pride in ensuring our helicopters are maintained to the highest standards, supporting our mission of safety, quality and reliability.

Define your job title in one sentence

My team primarily handles maintenance on smaller helicopters like H135, H145 and AS350. These rotorcraft are frequently used by organisations such as DOCTOR-HELI (air ambulance), the police, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, amongst others.

What’s one thing that makes your job exciting or special?

One thing that makes my job particularly interesting is the variety of tasks we handle. Depending on the maintenance needed, we might disassemble an aircraft, conduct a thorough inspection, and carry out necessary repairs before reassembling it and ensuring it is ready to fly again. We also handle specialised troubleshooting requests from our customers. This type of work is exclusive to our department, which makes it both challenging and rewarding.

What inspired you to join Airbus?

I have always wanted to work for an international company, having had my first encounter with Airbus during a university company information session. What truly inspired me was the company’s corporate video back then, which showcased helicopters in action during rescue operations around the world. Watching that, I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of Airbus and contribute to such meaningful work.

Is there something that surprised you about working for Airbus?

One thing that surprised me was how widely Airbus Helicopters are used across Japan. In the maintenance department in Kobe, there are about 100 mechanics, and our main responsibility is ensuring these helicopters are in optimal condition for operation. This really reinforced how crucial the role of a mechanic is in keeping everything running smoothly.

Explain what you do in simple terms

I handle aircraft disassembly, assembly and inspection, ensuring everything is in top condition. I also provide training for mid-career, expatriate  employees and offer support to colleagues working overseas.

How does your role contribute to Airbus’ mission or the success of its products?

The aircraft we maintain play a crucial role in transporting people and performing rescue missions for those in need. By ensuring that the helicopters are in peak condition, our work directly contributes to saving lives, which aligns with Airbus Helicopters’ mission of providing safe, reliable, and life-saving solutions.

How has Airbus supported your career growth or personal development?

Airbus has provided me excellent support for my career and personal development. On the technical side, I have received specialised training in engine maintenance for various helicopter models, as well as training on slings and crane operations. Additionally, Airbus offers internal qualification training, which has helped me enhanced my skills.

How has your career evolved since you joined Airbus?

On my first day, I knew nothing about helicopters or how to perform maintenance. Now, I am able to work independently, assist with rotorcraft  inspections, and even had the opportunity to go on business trips abroad.

For engineers: What’s one technical skill you’ve developed here that you’re especially proud of?

When I first joined, I had no prior experience with helicopters. However, through hands-on training and dedication, I have gained the skills to work independently and even mentor my junior colleagues!

Is there a specific project or moment you’re particularly proud of? Why?

One project that I am particularly proud of involved providing full maintenance service on-site for a foreign customer in a country without an Airbus maintenance facility permit. Not only did the customer praise us for the high quality work and express complete satisfaction, but our team worked seamlessly with local departments, as well as teams back in Japan. We were able to complete the maintenance and safely deliver the aircraft.

For early careers: What’s been your favourite project or task so far?

One of my favourite experiences was a short business trip abroad, where I led a small team of 5-6 colleagues for on-site maintenance work. As the team representative, I had the opportunity to communicate with both the customer and various stakeholders. It really made me feel like an integral part of the team and gave me a strong sense of involvement in the project.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Airbus?

Take the leap and embrace the opportunities that come with a career at Airbus. The industry offers endless possibilities to explore the world , develop your skills, and make a real impact. Do not hesitate to spread your wings and see where it can take you!

What do you appreciate most about Airbus as a workplace?

What I appreciate most about Airbus is the strong culture of collaboration. Maintaining an aircraft is a team effort - from the moment it arrives for servicing, until it is delivered back to the customer. It is not just about working with our immediate department, but also coordinating with other departments and sometimes even different Airbus subsidiaries. Mutual support is key, and the sense of collective effort  makes the workplace truly special.

Which Airbus value resonates with you, and why?

Respect - for both people and for aircraft. I have deep respect for the aircraft we maintain because of their vital role in saving lives. When it comes to people, I believe in seeking advice when I encounter challenges I cannot solve on my own. I am grateful for the guidance received from my seniors and colleagues across different departments, as it helps me build my knowledge and broaden my understanding.

What’s one message you’d like to share with the next generation of aerospace professionals?

If you have the passion and confidence, do not hesitate to take that first step. Believe in your abilities, and together, we can soar to new heights.

Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that inspires you in your work?

One of my favourite mantras is “Don’t worry, be happy!” Overthinking does not help when you are stressed. Sometimes, all it takes is resetting your mind!
