From Lisbon to the skies: How Carmen is harmonising high-tech with sustainability
For Carmen, a Commodity Manager based in Portugal in our Airbus Global Business Services, creativity isn't just about engineering the aircraft of tomorrow: it's about building a culture that values both high-performance technology and the planet we fly across.
Aerospace is entering its most creative era yet."
Since joining Airbus in 2023, Carmen has navigated a dynamic career path, transitioning from Environmental Compliance to managing critical supply chains for Defence and Space.
As a Standard Parts Commodity Manager, Carmen ensures the stability of the platforms that keep defence aircrafts flying.
"In a sector as complex as defence, even the smallest 'standard part' can become a major bottleneck," Carmen explains. Her role involves a mix of strategy and problem-solving, finding new suppliers and streamlining internal workflows.
"I’m not just doing paperwork," she says. "I'm ensuring that the foundation of our aircraft is secure, so we can deliver on our promises to our customers without delay."
Building something new in Portugal
Carmen describes her time in Lisbon as having a "front-row seat" in the development of a fresh corporate culture.
"Being part of a brand-new project in Portugal has been especially exciting," she notes. The Airbus Global Business Services (GBS) in Portugal is characterised by a unique spirit of collaboration. The diversity of the team is its greatest strength, creating an environment where cultural differences fuel innovation.
The constant learning curve in Lisbon keeps her motivation going.
"The industry is so highly regulated that you are always adapting... I've learned that a positive team environment isn't just a bonus, it's a requirement."
A champion for the planet
While her technical role focuses on supply chains, Carmen also serves as the Sustainability Focal Point, bridging her professional responsibilities with her personal values.
"As Airbus Portugal expands, our commitment to the planet must grow with it," she asserts.
Her most memorable experience? Organising a reforestation day. "It was rewarding to see people from different departments unite outside the office," she recalls. From tree planting to beach clean-ups along the Portuguese coast, Carmen is helping move the local site beyond small initiatives toward a robust, consolidated sustainability plan.
Advice for the next generation
