Airbus and Indonesia have maintained an enduring relationship for more than 40 years. This dates back to 1979 when Garuda Indonesia placed an order for the original A300B4.
Beyond its commercial success, Airbus also has established itself as Indonesia’s largest aviation industry partner. Indonesian aerospace firms supply aerostructures and components across the Airbus commercial aircraft, military and helicopter product lines.
Commercial Aircraft
Some 190 Airbus aircraft are currently operated by airlines in Indonesia, including Garuda Indonesia and its subsidiary Citilink, Indonesia AirAsia and carriers from the Lion Air Group. In addition, customers from the country have more than 200 aircraft on order with Airbus for future delivery.
Helicopters
Airbus is a leader in the Indonesian helicopter segment with nearly 150 rotorcraft in service with more than 30 Indonesian operators. This includes helicopters ranging from the light single and light twin models to the larger Dauphin and Super Puma families.
Defence
Airbus has a long relationship with the military sector in Indonesia, with some 60 aircraft currently in service with the country’s armed forces and civil agencies, performing a variety of transport and maritime surveillance operations. These include C212, CN235 and C295 aircraft produced locally in Bandung by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI).
In 2022 Indonesia became a new export customer for the latest generation A400M in a multirole tanker and transport configuration. Capable of operating from rough and short runways, the A400M will strengthen the Indonesian Air Force’s ability to operate to remote regions, including in response to natural disasters.
Space
Airbus also works with Indonesia’s space agency on satellite imagery. This enables the agency to receive images from the Airbus-built Pleiades and TerraSAR-X satellites, helping the country to monitor and optimise its natural resources.
Industrial partnerships
PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) produces structures for the C295 medium-lift transporter and operates a final assembly line for the type. In addition the manufacturer supplies a wide range of components for the A320 Family and long range A350s, as well as the main fuselage assembly and tail boom for both civil and military variants of the H225 helicopter.
Based on the long-term relationship between Airbus and PTDI, the two companies recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore opportunities for extended partnerships, especially in the defence and helicopter markets.
