Airbus to showcase innovation at Farnborough

The UK is one of Airbus’s four home nations and home to the Farnborough Air Show, one of the most significant aerospace events in the world.

Connecting Europe

Hi Fly, the 14th operator of the iconic double-decker wide-body airliner, is displaying its A380 for the first time at Farnborough International Airshow 2018 (UK)

Airbus will showcase its world-leading product line-up of commercial aircraft at Farnborough. The A350-1000 offers the very latest in aerodynamics and advanced technologies to provide unrivalled fuel efficiency on long-haul routes, thus reducing the aircraft’s impact on the environment. Airbus will also display the A330neo, which features new wings and new generation engines, and is due to enter into service later this year. Moreover, the A321LR allows airlines to tap into new long-haul markets that were not previously accessible with current single-aisle aircraft. The static display will feature two A220-300s which, along with the smaller A220-100, represent the newest members of the Airbus single-aisle family.

Partnering with Purpose

One of the highlights is the presentation of the BLADE wing laminar flow demonstrator programme conducted under the European Clean Sky research programme. The BLADE project is part of the EU’s Clean Sky programme and assess laminar flow wing technology on a large airliner. It aims to further reduce aircraft emissions, bringing with it a 50 per cent reduction of wing friction and up to 5 per cent lower CO2 emissions.

The high-speed helicopter Racer is also part of Clean Sky 2. Its design is optimised for a cruise speed of 400 km/h and aims at validating the best trade-off between cost-efficiency, low emissions and mission performance. The A340BLADE and the Racer demonstrate that sustainability and competitiveness go hand in hand at Airbus, and that EU research programmes can be very effective.

Defending Europe

Airbus Defence and Space will display its broad product portfolio of military aircraft. The highlight is the A400M military transporter in special Royal Air Force colours. Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, the A400M can perform strategic and tactical transport missions and also undertake air-to-air refuelling.

Also featured will be the world record holding Zephyr, Airbus’ solar-electric stratospheric unmanned aircraft that combines the advantage of a satellite with the flexibility and persistence of a UAV. Space expertise will feature strongly, including the environmental monitoring programme Copernicus where Airbus designs and manufactures Sentinel satellites. In the show’s ‘Space Zone’, Airbus will exhibit the ExoMars rover prototype that will drive on a simulated Martian surface.

At Farnborough, Airbus will demonstrate its technological leadership in commercial and military aviation as well as space technology. The latest technological advancements and innovations are proof that competitiveness, sustainability and performance go hand in hand in aerospace.
