Airbus Foundation provides assistance in Guatemala after the eruption of the Volcán de Fuego

The Airbus Foundation worked with the Guatemalan Red Cross after the eruption of the Volcán de Fuego in early June, which caused 100 deaths and the disappearance of 200 people.

In collaboration with local helicopter operator, Transportes Aéreos Guatemaltecos, the Airbus Foundation assisted the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and the Red Cross, by offering six flight hours in an H125 to carry out aerial damage assessments.

During 21 and 22 June, the H125 flew over 75 km in the departments of Escuintla, Sacatepéquez and Chimaltenango, where the volcano is located.

The flights allowed authorities to evaluate the damage, identify zones affected by pyroclastic flows, determine the effect of the disaster on cultivation and grazing areas, and to locate isolated communities so as to identify alternative routes by which to distribute humanitarian aid.
