55 million passengers and counting: Airbus’ A380 proves its worldwide appeal

A380 Asiana delivery ceremony 14

First A380 delivery to Asiana Airlines

The initial A380 delivery to Asiana Airlines – which becomes the 11th worldwide operator – once again highlights the continued popularity of Airbus’ 21st century flagship jetliner with both airlines and passengers alike.
Taking off or landing every five minutes on average around the globe, the A380 has become a true world traveller since its 2007 commercial service entry, with the combined fleet flying more than 55 million passengers and operating regular service to most of the world’s busiest airports.
These impressive figures have established the aircraft’s reputation as the “queen of the skies,” backed by the A380’s unique ability to capture traffic growth, offer superior levels of comfort to passengers in all classes of service – including Airbus’ modern comfort standard of at least 18-inch wide seats in economy class – and its efficient operating economics, explained Airbus’ Head of A380 Marketing Antonio Da Costa.
“Passengers around the world have confirmed the popularity of the A380, seeking out this aircraft’s unrivalled comfort levels,” he said. “The jetliner’s unique double-deck configuration also allows airlines to maintain the lowest seat-mile costs in the sky today, while adding capacity on high-value long-haul routes, such as those that connect major aviation hubs.”
With the delivery of Asiana Airlines’ first aircraft, 132 A380s have joined the fleets of 11 world class carriers. The global fleet has performed over 1.3 million total flight hours with an average daily utilisation exceeding 13 hours per aircraft.
