Extended runway handed over to Airbus in Hamburg

Summary

The runway at Finkenwerder has been completed, providing the length necessary for acceptance flights of all A380 versions. Airbus currently outfits the cabin interiors of its customer aircraft at Finkenwerder, and it is to construct a new delivery centre where customers from Europe and the Middle East will receive their A380s.

The extended runway in Finkenwerder, now boasting a total length of 3,273 metres, was handed over to Airbus in Germany at an official ceremony on 16 July. The runway extension is necessary to perform acceptance flights for all versions of the Airbus A380.

Acceptance flights take place before delivery to the airline and allow Airbus and customer pilots to check that all functions of the aircraft are technically perfect and that the aircraft provides the promised performance in terms of fuel consumption and flight characteristics.

Completion of the runway was also one of the prerequisites for the construction of an A380 delivery centre in Hamburg, where customers from Europe and the Middle East will take delivery of their A380s.

The new delivery centre, on the Mühlenberger Sand site extension, will comprise an attractive and representative delivery facility with office space for A380 teams, customer offices, workshop areas, offices for conducting contract negotiations. A boarding area and a freight loading zone for the preparation of A380 delivery flights in compliance with regulations are being built on an area of more than 5,000 square metres. Also planned are a ceremony area and an open space and gallery from which customers can view their aircraft through seven metre-high glass panes.
