On 8 March 2018, Voom launched its on-demand helicopter booking platform in Mexico City

An on-demand helicopter booking platform

Voom was the first-to-market helicopter booking platform that connected travellers with air taxi companies in Mexico City (Mexico), São Paolo (Brazil), and San Francisco (USA).

Democratising access to the skies

Launched in 2016 as an Acubed project, Voom was created with the ambition to democratise access to the skies and transform how people move in urban environments. Over four years, it grew from a two-person project in Silicon Valley to a +30 employee outfit operating in three of the most congested metropolitan areas in the world. Voom was neither an airline nor a helicopter operator. It was a mobile booking platform that enabled travellers to book a flight in seconds and reach their destination within minutes.

Key learnings on how people move in urban areas

In its four years of existence, Voom successfully achieved its two major initial goals:

  • Launching and operating the first helicopter mobile booking platform of its kind in the world
  • Providing Airbus with a wealth of valuable behavioural and operational data about urban air mobility (i.e. mission requirements and constraints, customer preferences, etc.) to inform a future vehicle design

Over the course of operations, Voom achieved the following milestones:

  • +150,000 active app users
  • +15,000 helicopter passengers
  • 45% repeat customer rate
  • 60% first-time Voom customers in its first year of operation
  • Average ticket price equivalent to 2x the cost of a private ground taxi service for 1/10th of the time

Voom ceased its operations in April 2020. Airbus continues to invest in the urban mobility sector and is leveraging the knowledge gained through Voom.

The on-demand helicopter mobility service that enables passengers to request a seat on a helicopter within minutes via a mobile app. For everyday commuters, it offers an alternative form of transportation in some of the world’s most congested cities.
