Fly Your Ideas competition

Airbus inspires the next generation to innovate for the future of aeronautics

Since the Fly Your Ideas competition launched in 2008, students from around the globe have competed to provide creative solutions.

Airbus’ Fly Your Ideas competition offers a unique opportunity for students around the world to activate their pioneering spirit and innovate for the future. Teams of three to four people tackle global challenges with support from Airbus, harnessing the latest digital tools and technologies to help build a safer, cleaner, better connected world.

Fly Your Ideas is a biennial competition that provides students the opportunity to work together in diverse teams to stretch their imaginations. It’s a chance for students to apply their classroom learning and research to real-world challenges to envision solutions for the future of aerospace.

Since 2012, the competition has been supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), followed with a partnership signed in 2014. Since Fly Your Ideas launched in 2008, more than 20,000 students have registered to participate, from over 650 universities in more than 100 countries around the world.

The competition involves three increasingly competitive rounds leading to a live final. The selected teams for the final are asked to develop and prototype their solutions, then present their projects to an expert jury at the final event. The global amount of the prize is €45 000.

Fly Your Ideas 2019

Team DAELead won Airbus' 2017 Fly Your Ideas competition with an innovative design of a private stowage compartment situated underneath a passenger's feet.

With its 2019 Fly Your Ideas competition, Airbus challenged students worldwide to submit solutions to genuine and digital challenges in the following areas:

  • Electrification: How can we fly further, longer and cleaner by developing embedded electrical energy systems?
  • Data services: What innovative applications and services can you create based on Airbus data?
  • Cyber security: How can we securely and seamlessly authenticate travellers while minimising the impact on passengers, airport security and airlines?
  • Internet of things: How can this revolutionise the passenger experience or improve collaboration in the aerospace industry?
  • Artificial Intelligence: In the future of aerospace or industrial manufacturing, how can we use AI to identify opportunities or entirely new business models?
  • Mixed reality: How can the aerospace industry put Apple and Google’s mass market Mixed Reality apps to work?

The Round 1 submission phase ended in November 2018, with nearly 300 ideas sent from students representing 72 countries worldwide. After a team of Airbus specialists from across the business reviewed and evaluated all proposals, 51 international student teams were selected to advance to Round 2 in December.

The teams – involving 179 students representing 47 nationalities from 66 universities – have three months to mature their ideas with the support of Airbus mentors and aerospace experts before up to six finalists are chosen. The Fly Your Ideas finale will be held in June 2019, giving students the opportunity to showcase their ideas to an audience of industry experts.
