The winner of the 7th Airbus GEDC Diversity Award is C4. The Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom diversity initiative from University of York was selected the winner for their project designed to increase diversity in engineering education.

Airbus-led consortiums have recently won a series of contracts to shape the future of EGNOS, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service. EGNOS enhances Galileo and GPS signals to provide augmented safety of life services.

The future of the world’s most accurate positioning system, Europe’s Galileo, is being secured with the award of contracts for next generation satellites by the European Space Agency (ESA). Airbus has been selected to design and manufacture six Galileo second generation spacecraft at its new satellite integration centre in Friedrichshafen (Germany).

Airbus, with its key partners Indra and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona/IEEC, and the EGNOS V3 stakeholders the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and Eutelsat, have successfully completed the first test signal broadcast of the European Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) EGNOS V3 respecting the Single Frequency L1 and Dual Frequency Multi Constellation L5 formats.

The past years have seen an unprecedented rise in the volume of data streams that circle the globe. Terrestrial communications infrastructure is quickly expanding worldwide to meet the ever-growing demand. However, terrestrial fibre-based networks depend on intrinsically point-to-point implementation of suitable infrastructure – often involving expensive earthworks and construction – and thus neglecting less populated/developed areas almost completely. Laser based satellite communication has the potential to help bridge this digital gap for a variety of applications such as television broadcasting, internet and phone services, virtual private networks over satellite and the like.
