Maritime domain awareness and decision-making support

 

Maritime safety and security demands highly modular, scalable and integrated solutions to enable multi-agency and multi-national coordination. This can be achieved through coordinated support of the entire maritime surveillance cycle. For over 50 years, Airbus has supported its customers’ maritime missions. By integrating our advanced maritime surveillance systems, we enable quick response times which are essential to combat a large range of threats, environmental risks and to effectively protect natural resources.

 

STYRIS® implements and delivers turnkey systems covering the full spectrum of Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) from both safety and security perspectives. Typical applications are for Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), Coastal Surveillance Systems (CSS) and maritime Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) systems. Thus, STYRIS® is the single product line from Airbus for collecting, processing, consolidating, enriching, distributing and displaying data from a wide range of maritime sensors. The software consolidates data gathered from sensors like Radars, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Radio Direction Finders (RDF), Cameras, Weather Stations and Sonars.

 

Thanks to “24/7” monitoring of areas of interest and its best in class real time tracking and data fusion, STYRIS® increases maritime domain awareness by ensuring an accurate Recognised Maritime Picture.

 

STYRIS® supports operator decision and multi-agency coordination providing intuitive command and control tools to accelerate decision making and stakeholder coordination, to maintain operator focus and to reduce workload, such as:

  • Best interceptor selection

 

Thus, the solution was developed to achieve the best ergonomic Human Machine Interface (HMI). It provides intuitive means for the operator to retrieve detailed information related to the objects displayed on the traffic image and to interact with the integrated functions, such as sensor settings and camera controls.

 

Developed in house specifically for maritime applications, STYRIS® can be tailored to suit the highest level of customer requests for port authorities, ministry of defence, navies, coast guard, police and private companies.

Strategic Capabilities

 
Vessel Traffic Services (VTS)

SYRIS® VTS Systems not only offer IALA compliant Information (INS), Navigational Assistance (NAS) and Traffic Organisation Services (TOS), but deliver a much wider scope of value-added services to ships, habours and other commercial port services.

 

Our Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) systems provide operators with an overview of their areas of interest, enabling them to monitor and to respond to critical maritime situations. Moreover VTS allows operators to quickly communicate to all relevant authorities.

 

Core of these systems are the unique software modules and hardware components which are being developed and improved for more than 25 years in house. These systems use a sensor network which may include:

 

•            Radars

•            AIS base stations

•            Radio Direction Finders

•            Cameras and Thermal Imagers

 

The feature set and deployment of each sensor network is adapted to the specific needs of the particular area.

 

Our unique VTS software oversees the management of the sensor network and links the various inputs to a specific tracked vessel or target. It can also associate the vessel track to existing historical database information, either locally or internationally. All operations are continuously archived including tracks, raw radar video, operator actions, voice communications as well as camera and imager video.

Coastal Surveillance System (CSS)

Many countries have genuine concerns for the integrity of their borders and for the protection of shore based resources. Leaving coastal areas unsupervised can become a security threat.

Our coastal surveillance technology is built upon the fundamental structure of VTS and offers all its features. In addition, it offers the capability to detect, track and identify even the smallest targets as well as new feature sets providing unique tools for coastal surveillance:

 

  • Multiple parallel tracking to detect and track small targets even in the presence of large vessels
  • Day and night cameras and thermal imagers which can be programmed for independent scan or slave to radar tracking
  • Decision aid software with preplanned protocols to prevent interdiction decision making
  • A structure designed around multiple control centers spread across large areas with multiple layers of authority
  • Information access and sharing between diverse authorities such as customs, immigration, navy and coast guards. 
  • Integration of views displaying of sea and air activities
  • Overall maritime domain awareness coupled with land border awareness for overall control
  • Complete archiving and overall system health and monitoring

Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP)

It is often necessary to locate valuable infrastructure assets in potentially dangerous or difficult to protect areas. These sites might include nuclear plants, oil and other energy platforms, rigs, floating production storage and offloading units (FPSO), terminals and military sites. Taking the not negligible threat of world terrorism into account, authorities recognize a need to deploy technologies to monitor, detect and enable protective measures for such sites.

Our surveillance technology includes a number of specialized features for detecting, tracking, identifying suspected threats and communicating information to the responsible authorities. Such a system is organized around a network of sensors which typically includes Radar (sea and land), AIS, and various types of Cameras, Optronics, Frequency Agile Radio Direction Finders and sometimes Sonar Diver Detectors. Voice communications are channeled and ancillary data are also communicated on this network.

 

These systems use similar technologies and tools as those used for coastal surveillance applications, but are specially adapted to the specific environment of use.

It helps you, effectively administer and maintain your STYRIS® product regardless of your organization’s size or complexity, to achieve the optimum system availability throughout the lifecycle of your product.

 

The catalogue is sub-divided into specific elements which are designed to encompass the full spectrum of customer services. These services have been digitally transformed to utilize the latest technologies in the provision of customer services where appropriate, and are presented in the leaflets.

Innovation and Demonstration facility

Airbus is proud to perform development, innovation and demonstration of STYRIS® in our unique facility located in La Ciotat France. In this environment, located in the south of France, 40 km east of Marseille, the systems and its capabilities can be tested under real life maritime conditions. The demonstration system features a wide range of sensors such as Radars, Electro Optics, Radio Direction Finders, Maritime Communication and Metrological Sensors.

 

Thanks to this innovation and demonstration facility, Airbus is able to conduct development and evaluation of the STYRIS® portfolio under real use conditions. Innovations and adaptions to the STYRIS® technology can be tested immediately. That is what makes STYRIS® a leading edge technology. 

 

Furthermore, in La Ciotat, customers also experience the full spectrum of STYRIS® capabilities. The site is also used for training purposes for prospective operators and maintainers and for user conferences. It provides support all along the customer’s journey.
