Michael Schoellhorn is Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Airbus (Toulouse, France) and a member of the company’s Executive Committee. He leads the production, quality, procurement and information management organizations. His overriding goal is to ensure the speed, efficiency and quality of aircraft production at Airbus.
As the company embarks on an era of digital and series manufacturing, Michael’s role is to implement continuous operational excellence and to develop the production system of the future.
He joined Airbus in February 2019 from BSH Home Appliances (Munich, Germany), a leading manufacturer of home appliances, owned by the Robert Bosch Group (Stuttgart, Germany). He was Chief Operating Officer and a member of the company’s Management Board from 2015 until his departure in 2019.
Michael started out his career with Bosch in 1999. He held various senior management positions in the automotive sector of Robert Bosch GmbH - in the US, the Czech Republic and Germany until he was appointed EVP for Manufacturing and Quality in 2012. During his time at Bosch, Michael gained a broad expertise in production, engineering, quality, supply chain management as well as digitalization and end-to-end process optimization. He continuously furthered his technological and business acumen at IMD Business School (Lausanne, Switzerland), Tepper School of Business (Pittsburgh, USA), Bosch-Carnegie-Institute (Pittsburgh, USA), and the Robert-Bosch-Kolleg (Stuttgart, Germany).
Before joining Bosch, Michael worked in academia as a research assistant at the Helmut Schmidt University (University of the German armed forces) in Hamburg (1994-1999). He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Control Engineering, both from the Helmut Schmidt University.
Michael began his career in 1984 in the German armed forces, where he served as an officer and a helicopter pilot until 1994, with assignments in Germany and the US.
Michael is a member of the presidency of BDLI (the German aerospace industries association), and of the Baden Baden Entrepreneur Talks, a discussion forum for German business and political leaders. Michael is also the chairman of the Supervisory Board of Airbus Germany (Airbus Operations GmbH).
He is married with two children, and outside of his professional life, he enjoys skiing, biking and hiking.
