I love my job, but I love my out-of-work life, too. I have flexible working hours, as do most of my colleagues: starting between 7:30 and 9:30 and finishing between 16:00 and 18:00. As long as we attend the meetings we’re expected to and achieve our deadlines, we’re free to determine our own work patterns.

Personally, I’m an early riser, so I like to be at work between 7:30 and 8:00, meaning I can have more of the evening free; I play piano and cello and live in a flat, so I’m sure my neighbours prefer my not getting them up really early or playing late at night, too!
Sometimes, the amount of work to get done looks like too much for the time available, particularly where we have a big spacecraft review coming up. The work becomes very intense, sometimes the time scales end up shortened because, for example, we haven’t received an instrument model when we needed it, or we end up with more work to do because the analysis has shown a problem that needs solving.
At that point, passion and teamwork are what gets you through: somehow it all comes together; we get the information to the customer on time and have a design that works.
