A validation simulator has been used since 2009 to develop how pilots will interact with systems in the A350 XWB cockpit, while two development simulators have been operational from 2011 to confirm a proper integration of the next-generation airliner’s electronics using real systems.

As the next-generation A400M continues its certification evaluations, all five of the programme’s flight test aircraft took to the sky this week for a unique formation flight performed by the Airbus Flight Test teams. The exercise originated from Toulouse, France. Once completed, each aircraft returned to its individual testing activities – which include evaluations for handling quality (performed by A400M test aircraft MSN1), wing pod hose stability (MSN2), engine performance (MSN3), pressurisation and oxygen (MSN4), and function and reliability (MSN6).

With Airbus Chief Test Pilot Military Edward Strongman and Experimental Test Pilot Ignacio Lombo, the King Juan Carlos I of Spain made a local flight of some 40 minutes from the Torrejón base near Madrid. During the flight, the King – who is qualified as a military pilot – took control of the aircraft for 20 minutes at an altitude of around 10,000 ft. and performed a series of manoeuvres, including turns and a simulated delivery of humanitarian supplies.

Airbus’ "Sharklet" wing-tip devices took to the sky for the first time on 30 November 2011 with a successful maiden flight using an A320 development aircraft. This nearly five-hour flight from Toulouse, France kicked off a multi-month test campaign to validate the Sharklets’ performance, confirm their aerodynamic behaviour and gather data for certification. Sharklets are expected to reduce fuel burn over long sectors by at least 3.5 per cent, representing an annual CO2 reduction of approximately 700 tonnes per aircraft.

As part of its commitment to environmental performance, Airbus is a key contributor to the Atlantic Interoperability initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE) programme – which is spearheading energy-efficient air traffic management (ATM) operations for lower engine emissions and aircraft noise. Another A380 milestone was achieved on 15 July when Airbus’ 21st century flagship jetliner was welcomed to its 110th airport. This occurred when the MSN004 A380 arrived at Schiphol airport in the Netherlands. The aircraft tested well in airport compatibility evaluations. With this landing, the A380 has now visited 110 airports worldwide.
