In March 2007, the A380 makes its first visit to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport for route proving exercises. The aircraft is greeted on arrival by two custom-built fire and rescue trucks from the New York City Fire Department’s Rescue Company 1. Both of these vehicles were donated by Airbus in 2002 as part of its efforts to help New York's emergency teams recover from devastating September 11 losses.

An A380’s engine must be able to withstand collisions with birds or other foreign objects. To determine this capability, a fan blade-off test is performed with the aircraft, during which a blade is purposely separated from the fan while the engine is running at full throttle. The certification campaign for Airbus’ 21st century flagship jetliner also included flutter and rejected take-off tests.

The type certification process demonstrates an aircraft’s compliance with all applicable airworthiness requirements – more simply, that it is safe for public transportation. The A380 underwent extensive wind tunnel testing during the early stages of its certification campaign. In addition, an A380 systems integration test bench – known informally as the “iron bird” – was used to evaluate and verify the aircraft’s avionics components and systems.

Compatibility tests for the A380 were performed at some of the busiest airports in the world, including Germany’s Frankfurt, Singapore’s Changi International and London’s Heathrow. These trials evaluated the servicing, catering and cargo handling procedures for the aircraft, as well as operation of its special passenger bridges that allow for simultaneous access to the A380’s two decks.

The A380 underwent numerous safety and performance tests during its certification campaign. This double-deck aircraft completed a highly successful evacuation trial – during which all 873 participants were able to leave the aircraft in less than 90 seconds – as well as water ingestion and flooded runway tests.  At the end of the certification process, an intensive 150-hour, 17-day route proving evaluation was performed – confirming the aircraft was ready for commercial service.
