Qantas is the first airline to test Airbus’ more environmentally-friendly “base coat, clear coat” livery painting method, which requires only one layer of thick paint and a layer of varnish or clear coat for protection.

During the 2006 Farnborough Airshow, Airbus and six other major European aerospace manufacturers – Dassault Aviation, Eurocopter, Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg, Rolls-Royce, Safran and Thales – sign a letter of intent for a Joint Technology Initiative to prepare an innovative "Clean Sky" policy. This seven-year research project will be the largest ever set up jointly with the European Commission.

The A380 is painted in Airbus livery at the company’s Hamburg, Germany facility. The three-week process also is comprised of cleaning, grinding, masking and unmasking the 3,100 square metres of the aircraft’s surface. Airbus uses environmentally-friendly chromate-free paint and Desothane HS topcoat during the procedure, as well as electrostatic pistols that minimise paint mist.
