Airbuzz: the A320neo is taking off
A new era in commercial aviation opened in early 2016 as Airbus delivered the first A320neo (new engine option) Family aircraft – an A320neo version with Pratt & Whitney engines – to Lufthansa.
The NEO Family is Airbus’ latest enhancement to its best-selling single-aisle product line, with three members (A319neo, A320neo and A321neo) that offer an even higher standard of efficiency, along with reduced noise and emissions. Incorporating two new engine choices – the PurePower® PW1100G-JM Geared Turbofan™ from Pratt & Whitney and CFM International’s LEAP-1A – Sharklets wingtip devices, and the latest cabin improvements, NEO aircraft will deliver a 20 per cent fuel burn reduction by 2020 compared to current-generation jetliners.
In addition, the NEO provides an increase in range of 500 nautical miles, or the ability to carry two tonnes more payload at a given flight distance. For the environment, the A320neo’s fuel savings translate into some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft per year, and a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions along with reduced engine noise.
At the time of the NEO’s first delivery, Airbus had booked almost 4,500 orders for A320neo jetliners from 80 customers since the jetliner family’s launch in 2010. This continues the A320 Family’s reputation as a best-selling product-line, which has amassed more than 12,400 worldwide orders through 2015.
To meet this sustained level of commercial demand, Airbus is gradually increasing A320 Family production rates to reach an output of 60 single-aisle jetliners monthly by mid-2019. This ramp-up will be enabled by an additional production line in at Airbus’ A320 manufacturing site in Hamburg, Germany, as well as the integration of cabin furnishing activities at the A320 final assembly line in Toulouse, France.
