Airbus and the environment: A strategy that adds up

Airbus is showing its environmental perfomance at the 2014 Farnborough International Airshow, with technology innovations benefitting both the environment and the company’s bottom line.

As a leading aircraft manufacturer, Airbus’ takes a comprehensive approach to the eco-efficiency of the company’s operations, products and services throughout the entire process – based on a sound business case. 

“Making sure that our products and processes help to make aviation sustainable gives us a real advantage,” explained Andrea Debanné, Airbus’ Head of Environmental Affairs. “In an industry with fine margins, our customers want to carry as many passengers as they can, to as many airports as possible, safely, and at a cost that keeps them profitable. Designing for the whole product lifecycle, eliminating waste, reducing fuel consumption, recycling and considering aircraft end-of-life can all help them to do that.”

Airbus’ latest products, such as the A350 XWB  and newly-launched A330neo – which are taking centre stage at the Farnborough Airshow this week – along with the A320neo (new engine option) Family are prime examples of the company’s environmental philosophy. These jetliners significantly reduce fuel consumption compared to previous aircraft, which, in turn, provides reduced costs and enhanced operational performance for carriers – as well as lower C02 emissions.  

The Airbus environmental commitment also extends to its global operations – with ISO 140001 environmental certification for all industrial sites, products and services; supplemented by other company initiatives such as the Blue5 waste reduction programme.

“The thing that pleases me most about our approach to environmental issues is just how integrated it has become throughout the company,” Debanné said. “But the fact that the environment is now considered at every stage of an Airbus aircraft’s lifecycle is just as important.”
