Airbus and the Asia-Pacific region: Focus on the future

Airbus’ high-profile participation in the 2014 Singapore Airshow underscored its commitment to support the continued development of Asia-Pacific’s air transport industry, which represents the world’s fastest growing airline market.

As part of continued deployment of resources in this region, Airbus is investing in expanded capacity for spare parts and overhaul, preparing to increase pilot training resources, and creating opportunities for high-value research – all backed by new developments this week in Singapore.

One of the most visible steps was the Satair Airbus Singapore Centre’s formal inaugural in an operation of the Satair Group: a 100-percent Airbus subsidiary that merges Airbus’ former Material and Logistics Management function with the Denmark-headquartered Satair spares and aircraft maintenance company.

In another milestone, Airbus and Singapore Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create a joint flight training venture in Singapore for pilots, which also is expected to become a centre of excellence for the advancement of training methods and technologies.

Airbus’ strategy for the more rapid development of incremental innovation across its jetliner products will be assisted by high-value research activities – including big data analytics – to be performed jointly by the company with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).  A Memorandum of Understanding signed at the Singapore Airshow is expected to open new ways for airlines to reduce fuel consumption through speedier, more effective analysis of their operational data.

The Airbus commercial presence in Asia-Pacific will enter a new era with the service introduction of its A350 XWB extra widebody jetliner, which had a starring role at this week’s Singapore Airshow.  Of the 814 orders currently booked for the A350 XWB, 30 percent are from the Asia-Pacific region.

New business announced at the Singapore Airshow was the finalization of an acquisition by Vietnam’s VietJetAir for up to 100 A320 Family jetliners, and the firming up of a contract with Amedeo (previously Doric Lease Corp) for 20 A380s.

Airbus wrapped up its Singapore Airshow participation with a creative look to the future – opening the “Airbus Comfort Zone” passenger cabin and seat demonstrator at Changi Exhibition Centre to students who attended Education Day on 14 February.  This provided the next generation of air travellers and potential aviation industry decision-makers a first-hand experience in the Airbus-standard 18-inch wide economy class seat, and the students were invited to answer an interactive survey on passengers’ expectations for airline comfort.
