Charles Champion, Airbus COO and Head of the A380 programme, reviewed the achievements of the last 12 months in the A380 programme during the Airbus press conference at ILA.
Since the first flight, the A380 has kept flying, accumulating 1,238 flight hours in 367 flights as of 12 May. Static tests have been completed, fatigue tests have passed the 10,000 flight cycles, twice what is required for certification. Both Rolls-Royce and Engine Alliance engines are certified and four development aircraft are now flying.
The excellent results of the evacuation tests were followed by those of the first ever virtual flight, which highlight the importance Airbus is placing on the cabin, passenger comfort and on maturity at delivery.
In addition, the A380 has visited more than 20 airports, large or small, demonstrating its adaptability. “By 2010, 66 airports will be ready for the A380,” said Charles Champion.
In terms of production, 15 aircraft have now been assembled and completed. This includes the first aircraft for Singapore Airlines, which has been flown to Hamburg where it is getting fitted with its cabin. The freighter version has been launched and is now in sub-assembly.
Charles Champion paid tribute to the contribution of the seven German sites to the A380 programme on which more than 21,000 employees work, including more than 1,000 apprentices.
“Customer airlines pilots are now flying the A380 and the returns are very good,” said Charles Champion.
