Airbus ProSky’s new CEO sets his sights on broadening the products and services of this air traffic management subsidiary

Expanding Airbus ProSky’s collaboration with aircraft operators, air navigation service providers, airport authorities and other stakeholders to improve Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems is among the top priorities for this Airbus subsidiary’s new CEO, Paul-Franck Bijou.

Bijou said the importance of Airbus’ involvement in air traffic management allows the company to stay closely engaged with future aircraft needs, and to act as an advocate for customers whose business relies on access to the world’s airspace – promoting airline industry growth through safe and efficient ATM. 

“It is very important to increase our market share in the ATM domain because the more we know about airlines’ issues with regards to air traffic management, the more we can support these Airbus customers,” Bijou explained. “We also want to expand our portfolio and become a global player by supporting development of the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme in Europe and the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) in the U.S.”

Bijou noted that Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) – the joint initiative to improve airport operational efficiency through increased information exchange between key stakeholders – is the next step for ATM improvement. Airbus ProSky subsidiary’s products and services offer key solutions aimed at streamlining ATM as  EUROCONTROL in Europe and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration look to incorporate CDM in better handling air traffic flows, he said.
Helping to manage busy airspace over the Persian Gulf region is an example of where Airbus ProSky’s capabilities have been effective, Bijou said. In the United Arab Emirates, Airbus ProSky is working with airlines and the nation’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to reduce departure delays during peak hours and foster the continued evolution of air transportation in this region.

In addition, Airbus ProSky is innovating to further support the development of air traffic management, including the ELISE software simulation tool and Metron Aviation’s Harmony. 

ELISE allows for the construction of large buildings closer to airport runways without interfering with the vital aircraft landing systems.  Its capabilities were used develop “diffraction grating” panels on a new Airbus hangar at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport – enabling this added building for A330 jetliner production to be located closer to Runway 14R/32R.

The Harmony product from Airbus ProSky’s U.S.-based Metro Aviation alliance member is an advanced, integrated air traffic flow management solution that harmonises air traffic operations from gate-to-gate.  One of the newest users is Airservices Australia, which commenced operations with Harmony in 2012 – leading to reductions in air traffic delays, along with lowered fuel consumption and emissions for the aircraft operating in its airspace.

Prior to Bijou’s recent appointment as Airbus ProSky’s new CEO, he was the Vice President of Global Customer Affairs for Airbus ProSky and CEO of Quovadis – the Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) services subsidiary of Airbus ProSky.
