Climate monitoring missions

Space has become an undisputed diagnostic tool for detecting climatic and environmental changes on a planetary scale. European Space Agency, European Commission and Eumetsat are the key actors for climate monitoring from space in Europe. Airbus Defence and Space has a long history of Earth observation & climate monitoring missions. 27 Airbus built satellites already launched have direct or indirect applications for climate change monitoring, with more than 200 years accumulated in orbit experience. Sentinel-2 watches Earth's landmasses

The Sentinel-2 satellites will deliver optical images from the visible-near infrared to short-wave infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum using a total of 13 spectral bands with a resolution of 10, 20 or 60 meters and a swath width of 290 km and will be used mainly in the areas of land use, soil sealing, land management, forest monitoring, natural disasters (floods, forest fires, landslides, erosion) and humanitarian aid. Sentinel-2 is one of the European “Copernicus” programme satellites built under the industrial leadership of Airbus Defence and Space for the European Space Agency. MetOp-SG - Meteorological data across the entire globe

MetOp-SG comprises two series of satellites, with three units in each series. The Satellite A series focuses on optical instruments and atmospheric sounders, while the Satellite B series focuses on microwave instruments. Both types will be based on Airbus Defense and Space’s Astrobus high-power satellite platforms. While the Satellite A series will be developed and built under the industrial lead of Airbus Defence and Space in Toulouse (France), the design and manufacture of the Satellite B series will be led by the company’s Friedrichshafen site in Germany. Sentinel-1 - "Radar Vision"

The Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission is the European “Radar Vision” for the Copernicus joint initiative of the European Commission (EC) and the European Space Agency (ESA). Copernicus, previously known as GMES, is a European initiative for the implementation of information services dealing with environment and security. It is based on observation data received from Earth Observation satellites and ground-based information. The Airbus Defence and Space built Sentinel-1 SAR instrument with its all-weather, day-and-night imaging capability and its short revisit time has greatly enhanced the amount of valuable data available to users.
