Future by Airbus: Airbus unveils its 2050 vision for "Smarter Skies"

Airbus’ “Smarter Skies” vision – which was unveiled during September 2012 – consists of five concepts that could be implemented in all phases of an aircraft’s operation to reduce waste in time and fuel, as well as contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions. They include: aircraft takeoff in continuous “eco-climb,” free flight and formation along “express skyways,” free-glide approaches and landings, low-emission ground operations and the use of sustainable fuels and other potential energy sources. Detecting volcanic ash clouds with AVOID

After the 2010 eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, an invisible cloud of ash raised numerous complications for air navigation and led many airlines to ground their fleet. This underscored the need for new technology allowing aircraft to detect and analyze volcanic ash clouds – the development of which is being advanced by the AVOID (Airborne Volcanic Object Imaging Detector) project, a partnership between Airbus, easyJet and Nicarnica Aviation. This video highlights the project’s origins, and includes footage from the successful experiment conducted October 2013.
