The new U.S. A320 Family final assembly line will bring Airbus closer to its partners and customers in the world’s largest aviation market, while strengthening the company’s overall competitiveness, and increasing Airbus employment on both sides of the Atlantic.
Initial hiring already has begun for the Mobile, Alabama facility – which, at full production, will employ 1,000 highly skilled workers at the final assembly line and associated facilities.
With one job at the new Mobile assembly site creating four positions within Airbus, this “game-changing” U.S. facility will bolster the company’s existing operations in Europe and worldwide.
Interestingly, while Airbus is targeting the most qualified candidates for its positions in Mobile regardless of their current locations, new employees to date have strong ties to the region. Of the hires so far – human resources director, environmental health and safety manager, facilities manager and customs manager – all are from the state of Alabama, with three local to the Mobile area.
“We’ve had so much positive support from the Mobile community; it has embraced Airbus,” said Jennifer Ogle, the Human Resources Director for Airbus’ U.S. final assembly line. “There is a far-reaching benefit beyond the direct impact of Airbus jobs, including the employment for construction and the suppliers that are coming to the area.”
Airbus will hire dozens of employees this year for the Mobile final assembly line, with the number ramping up significantly in 2014 as direct assembly line manufacturing jobs are filled. Recruitment for these positions is scheduled to begin in late 2013. The hiring includes a working partnership with the Alabama Industrial Development and Training (AIDT) division of the Alabama Department of Commerce.
The Alabama site – located five miles from downtown Mobile at the Brookley Aeroplex – is scheduled to commence aircraft assembly in 2015 and deliver its first A320 Family jetliner the following year.
