Airbus' "See the bigger picture" youth photo contest was praised today for raising awareness about the growing threats to our planet's variety of life, and the competition's winning images are to be displayed next year at such prestigious venues as the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
Developed in a partnership between Airbus, National Geographic and the Secretariat of the United Nation's Convention on Biological Diversity, the contest encouraged youngsters to engage in nature and support a more sustainable world.
This contest's eight winners received a red-carpet welcome this afternoon at National Geographic's Washington, D.C. headquarters, where they were recognised for their images of animals, insects and plants that are representative of the world's
"There is huge interest in your great pictures, and we are going to make the best out of them during the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010," announced Rainer Ohler, Airbus' Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications. "In addition to Davos and UNESCO, I am sure there is much more to come with these very unique images - which are going to make a big difference in highlighting the need to save our planet."
The "See the bigger picture" competition was created as part of Airbus' support for the Green Wave, a youth engagement programme of the UN's Convention on Biological Diversity that is encouraging young people to learn about Earth's complex environment and the threats to its future.
Dr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, congratulated Airbus for its lead role in organising the contest. "As life on Earth is at stake, we need to prepare for the challenges of tomorrow by educating the children of today," he stated. "I pay tribute to Airbus and its corporate foundation - along with National Geographic - for the fantastic contribution of this photo competition in reconnecting children with nature."
