Airbus' A380 cabin and cargo engineering team in Hamburg, Germany is ready for another busy year of activity as it prepares the initial passenger interior configurations for two new operators, as well as a second variant for one of the current A380 airlines.
To keep track of the major effort that goes into defining and completing an A380 cabin layout, the Airbus team uses delta reports - a computing system that highlights differences between realisation and definition through data comparison.
Team members ensure that all work is fully in line with the digital mock-up (DMU), and collaborate closely with their colleagues in Toulouse, France on the technical definition. The A380's growing production maturity is supported by a continual process improvement in cabin installation as Airbus ramps up its production and delivery output.
Two of the new passenger configurations to be realised in 2009 are for Air France and Lufthansa. Air France's no. 1 A380 performed its maiden flight on 12 February from Toulouse, and the aircraft's planned handover later this year will make this French flag carrier the initial European customer to receive Airbus' 21st century flagship aircraft.
The other new configuration being developed in 2009 is a second passenger cabin specification for Emirates, which will be tailored for the A380's use on shorter routes - with flight times of up 8 hours. Emirates inaugurated its A380 service in August 2008, and has expanded its network to include operations at Dubai, New York, London, Sydney and Auckland. Seoul will welcome Emirates A380 flights beginning this November.
