40 million hour milestone reached by the A320 Family

Summary

The popular A320 Family has accumulated a combined total of 40 million flight hours, making it the first Airbus airliner family to attain this milestone.

The A320 Family has become the first Airbus aircraft family to reach 40 million flight hours, a statistic that underlines its position as the benchmark of single-aisle airliners. Since entry into service in 1988, more than 2,400 A320 Family aircraft have been delivered and are operated by more than 190 customers and operators on all continents.

The A320 Family fleet accumulates an average of 520,000 flight hours per month with an excellent dispatch reliability significantly higher than 99 per cent across the entire fleet, with more than 40 operators achieving a 100 per cent dispatch reliability. Such reliability is a contributing factor to the Family’s continued popularity, especially among low-cost carriers, whose success depends on their ability to meet very tight flight schedules day in, day out, thus maximising the utilisation of their aircraft.

The accumulation of so many thousand flight hours per month is largely to due its daily utilisation. On average every in-service A320 Family aircraft flies for nearly nine hours each day. This means that each airliner carries out approximately five missions per day of almost two hours’ duration.

The family concept of the four A320 Family aircraft is also an important factor in the achievement of this milestone. Almost 90 per cent of all A320 Family customers and operators have fleets including at least two different A320 Family members. The benefits of the family’s maximum operational commonality and equally-spaced seating capacities between 100 and 185, allow operators to select the appropriate aircraft for a given mission according to passenger demand thereby creating maximum operational usage of their fleet.
