The A380: Pleasing airlines and passengers worldwide

Just as the A380 has dominated the Paris Air Show with an impressive presence this week at Le Bourget Airport, the double-deck jetliner is becoming an increasing familiar sight at airports around the world – demonstrating its popularity with passengers, along with the operational and revenue-generating benefits for airlines.

To date, more than 109,000 revenue flights have been performed by the 100-plus A380s delivered so far to nine operators worldwide: Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qantas, Air France, Lufthansa, Korean Air, China Southern, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways International.  

The A380’s in-service numbers are as impressive as the aircraft itself.  Since entering commercial service in 2007, the fleet of jetliners has logged some 922,000 flight hours, carrying approximately 40 million passengers.  On average, an A380 takes off or lands every six minutes around the world 

Benefitting from the A380’s full-length upper and lower decks, the nine operating airlines have developed 12 different interior layouts by adapting the capacity and seating arrangements to their various route requirements.  These cabin configurations accommodate from 407 to 526 passengers, with a weighted average seat count across the fleet of 487. 

The next carrier to introduce A380s will be British Airways, with service beginning later this year after its initial aircraft is received on 4 July.   Airbus brought the no. 1 British Airways A380 to Le Bourget Airport for a multi-day appearance at the Paris Air Show this week, where one of Airbus’ in-house developmental aircraft also is present – complete with the “Own the sky” branding for latest Airbus marketing and advertising campaign.
