The Airbus ProSky company Quovadis has been selected to head the design and validation of improved Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) landing approaches at two airports in Spain’s Canary Islands, leading to a wide range of operational and environmental benefits.
This project – called CANARIAS (CO2 and Noise Approach Reduction for International Aviation Sustainability) – will demonstrate the value of PBN approaches in complex airspace through some 100 flight trials at the Lanzarote and La Palma airports.
Beginning in the first half of 2013, these evaluations will employ eco-efficient Required Navigation Performance with Authorization Required (RNP-AR) procedures – which allow aircraft to fly precisely along a predefined route using on-board navigation systems and the GPS-based global navigation satellite system, resulting in higher efficiency and enhanced safety.
The objectives of CANARIAS are to reduce track miles, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions; improve airport access; optimise airspace and reduce noise when compared with conventional procedures. The project also will help prepare local air traffic control personnel to efficiently handle a mix of RNP and non-RNP-capable aircraft during the CANARIAS flight trials, as well as prior to full implementation.
Quovadis was selected to head CANARIAS by the European Union’s Single European Sky ATM Research Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU), under the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative. For this project, Airbus guides an industry consortium that also includes AENA (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea), Air Berlin, easyJet and Thomas Cook Airlines.
