New innovative services from Airbus ProSky affiliate that ensures signals for vital runway Instrument Landing Systems will not be interrupted by buildings, hangars and obstacles has been selected for use at Switzerland’s Zurich Airport.
These services – called ELISE (Exact Landing Interference Simulation Environment) – will be applied in precisely simulating and optimizing the use of a new Instrument Landing System localizer antenna on Zurich’s Category III runway. Airbus ProSky’s selection was made by Zurich Airport and the Swiss air navigation service provider, skyguide.
ELISE services initially were developed by Airbus’ business nursery – the company’s operation that evolves promising new concepts and ideas – with the expertise of Airbus Engineering, the EADS Innovation Works corporate research and technology arm of Airbus parent company EADS, and the French ENAC aviation university.
Airbus ProSky is the Airbus air traffic management subsidiary, and it now is developing ELISE services as part of its product portfolio. In addition to ELISE functions that model the influence of airport buildings and obstacles on Instrument Landing Systems signals, these services also include “stealthy” building facades that eliminate the disturbances that structures could cause with the landing system localizer signals.
The application of such “stealth” technology was developed by EADS Innovation Works, and enables large and high buildings to be constructed in close proximity to runways. This is important as building expansion projects become more and more critical due to the lack of available space at airports.
Airbus already has used a stealth facade on the new A350 Final Assembly Line building at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, and Airbus ProSky will now propose this validated technology to space-constrained airports worldwide.
