A revolution in the cabin

Airbus' Digital Cabin Logbook is a new-generation solution that reduces operating costs, simplifies workloads and enhances maintenance efficiency.

Airbus is bringing cabin defect reporting into the 21st century with its Digital Cabin Logbook (DCL), which recognises and records technical faults electronically – simplifying crews’ work and reducing operating costs.

The disadvantages of existing paper-based cabin logbooks are obvious: handwritten entries often are unsystematic and provided in various languages – which reduces maintenance efficiency on the ground.

In contrast, the DCL enables standardised electronic defect reporting – offering crews a structured catalogue of some 2,000 entries covering an entire A380 cabin.

Airbus’ DCL is consulted upon the purser’s entry on the aircraft. If a technical fault is found, the cabin crew selects an appropriate description from the logbook’s configurable standard catalogue and documents it using an intuitive graphical user interface.

The web-based DCL application also can communicate with ground teams during flight, which saves valuable time. It allows mechanics to collect the necessary materials and start working immediately after the aircraft’s landing – which can prevent delays to the next departure.

This innovation impressed judges at the 2010 Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany – earning Airbus the coveted Crystal Cabin Award for the Material and Components category.

The Digital Cabin Logbook is part of an integrated e-logbook to be featured on every A380, with interfaces to both the technical and maintenance logbooks. These three logbooks have a common database - a first step towards integrated electronically-assisted processes.
