A cargo success story: the A330-200F freighter in operational service

The world’s only new-production mid-sized cargo jetliner is delivering on its promises, as the A330-200F demonstrates high reliability and flexibility during its first 14 months in operational service.

To date, A330-200F freighters have been provided by Airbus to four customers
– with the most recently-delivered aircraft brought to the Dubai Airshow this week only hours after its handover to Malaysia Airlines’ MASkargo freight subsidiary

“Every day, the growing A330-200F fleet is proving its capabilities and dependability  in operations of 400 flight hours or more per month, with a high reliability of 99.4 percent, and performance that is better than the initial specification,” explained Andreas Hermann, Airbus Vice President - Freighters.

Hermann said feedback from this initial in-service experience has been very positive as it confirms the A330-200F’s ability to achieve high load factors with excellent efficiency, and validates the opportunities for airlines to open new cargo business opportunities when compared to larger, more expensive freighter aircraft.


"The A330-200F is the perfect tool to mitigate risks in an increasingly volatile market and in a high fuel-price environment, offering competitive unit cost and flexibility to operators,” he added.
 
Since revenue flights were initiated by Etihad Crystal Cargo in September 2010, the nine A330-200Fs delivered to date have logged a combined total of some 20,000 flight hours in the approximately 4,800 flights performed.  Aircraft with both jet engine choices
– Rolls-Royce’s Trent 700 and the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 – are now in service.

Etihad Crystal Cargo of Abu Dhabi has taken delivery of the two A330-200Fs ordered from Airbus, while three other freighters currently are used in the fleet of Hong Kong Airlines on lease from AirCastle.  Turkish Airlines received two aircraft from its five on order, while MASkargo’s initial two A330-200Fs are expected to be joined in 2012 by the remaining two it is acquiring from Airbus. 

A total of 61 A330-200Fs have been sold as of 31 October, while total orders for the Airbus A330 Family – including freighters, passenger aircraft, military transport/tankers and VIP versions – have reached nearly 1,200.
