Reinforcing Airbus’ widebody leadership: A330neo is a winner at the Farnborough Airshow

Wrapping up its best performance ever at a biennial Farnborough Airshow, Airbus logged new business for 496 aircraft – including 133 widebody jetliners with agreements involving the newly-launched A330neo and in-production A330ceo versions, along with the soon-to-enter-service A350 XWB.

The A330neo (new engine option) was at the centre of attention throughout the week-long industry event, with Airbus’ go-ahead for the launch of this new engine option aircraft followed by rapid-paced announcements of commitments for 121 aircraft.  

These bookings involved both versions being offered: the A330-800neo, which has the same fuselage length as Airbus’ in-production A330-200ceo (current engine option); and the A330-900neo, which uses the A330-300ceo’s fuselage length.

The world’s newest, most modern and efficient aircraft, the Airbus A350 XWB, landed for the very first time at Hong International Airport (HKAI) earlier today.

The aircraft, MSN 005, is one of five A350 prototypes used to perform comprehensive flight test and development trials. The aircraft has to fly a representative airline schedule, demonstrating its maturity for airline operations. This route proving exercise is the last of the trials required for Type Certification, which is expected in September this year. The aircraft will be operated by Airbus flight crews.

The world’s newest airliner, the Airbus A350-900, has taken off this morning for the final stage towards certification. These Route Proving tests are designed to demonstrate readiness for airline operations and will include high airfield performance, auto-landing trials, and airport turnaround and handling services. Some flights will have passengers on board. The A350 world tour itinerary includes 14 major airports worldwide and one route via the North Pole.

Hawaiian Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for six A330-800neo aircraft. The agreement adds yet another name to the growing list of launch customers for the new aircraft type. The new commitment replaces a previous order placed by Hawaiian for six A350-800s.

During the 2014 Farnborough Air Show, Airbus won US$75.3 billion worth of business for a total of 496 aircraft, making it by far the largest Farnborough show for Airbus – both in terms of dollar value and also in the number aircraft. Airbus Customer Services’ Malaysian-based subsidiary – Airbus Customer Services Sbn Bnd – has commenced operations, providing support to customers in close proximity to this fast-growing South East Asia region.
