Airbus teams up with EADS Innovation Works to create “stealthy” airport buildings

An Airbus cooperative effort with its EADS parent company has developed a highly effective technology that enables the construction of buildings nearer to airport runways without hindering the vital landing systems that guide aircraft to a safe touchdown.

Patented by EADS’ corporate research and technology arm – EADS Innovation Works – and Airbus, this design applies specially-shaped aluminium “diffraction grating” panels to prevent a building from scattering signals broadcast by the airport’s Instrument Landing System (ILS), used during aircraft arrivals in reduced visibility conditions.

Painting of the first A350 XWB “MSN001” was today fully completed as it emerged in its Airbus livery out from the paintshop in Toulouse. This latest milestone shows that MSN001 is progressing well on its route to first flight.

The aircraft painting was achieved in less than seven days and follows the recent completion of MSN001’s flight-test-instrumentation (FTI) verification. Last month the aircraft underwent its engines installation, and passed a subsequent intensive phase of ground vibration tests. MSN001 will soon start the final tests before its maiden flight this summer.

Airbus has selected the five finalist student teams competing in the third edition of the
Fly Your Ideas challenge. The teams making the final are from Australia, Brazil, India, Italy and Malaysia. The students will present their ideas to a jury of Airbus and industry experts at Airbus’ headquarters in Toulouse on 12th June 2013. The winning team will receive a prize of €30,000 and the runners up €15,000.

Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s flag carrier, has taken delivery of its first A320 aircraft equipped with Airbus’ Sharklet fuel saving wing tip devices. The airline becomes the first in the region to benefit from the new wing-tip devices. Air Astana’s A320, powered by IAE V2500 engines, features a comfortable two class cabin, seating 148 passengers with 16 in business class and 132 in economy.

Airbus’ 21st century A380 flagship jetliner turns heads wherever it goes, and did so this time with some high-powered help at the 2013 Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition in Malaysia.
