H135

Versatility in high and hot environments

One of Airbus’ most successful light aircraft, the H135 is known for its high endurance, compact build, low sound levels, reliability, versatility and cost-competitiveness. This twin-engine helicopter can perform many different missions, landing almost anywhere, particularly high and hot, while carrying more payload over longer distances than other rotorcraft in its category.

20 Years of the H135

Airbus celebrated the H135's 20-year anniversary in October 2016. Two decades after entry into service, the H135 has continuously evolved and extended its performance and mission capabilities.

Aircraft

Backed by experience and a long heritage

The H135 is a member of Airbus’ light-medium EC135 family of helicopters.

Today around 1,200 twin-engine H135s have been delivered and are in service in more than 60 countries. With more than 300 operators, these versatile aircraft have together flown more than 4.2 million hours.

A high performer

Fitted with a bearingless main rotor, Airbus’ signature Fenestron® shrouded tail rotor, engine software modifications, and a new lateral air intake, the H135 provides additional payload and delivers best-in-class performance throughout its flight envelope.

Two FADEC-equipped engine options are available: Safran’s Arrius 2B2plus and Pratt & Whitney Canada’s 206B3. Both of these reliable turboshaft powerplants provide outstanding performance and vital power reserves – even in one-engine inoperative scenarios – along with low fuel consumption.

Safety by design

The H135’s state-of-the-art cockpit environment provides the highest possible safety levels. The Helionix® avionics system designed by Airbus offers operators undisputed superiority for in-flight envelope protection, pilot assistance and situational awareness – resulting in unprecedented flight safety levels. Helionix is a family concept with standardised features available also on the H175 and H145.

Further contributing to operational safety are the rotorcraft’s high-set main rotor and tail boom, and the Fenestron® shrouded tail rotor. Safety is additionally enhanced by the increased power of the H135’s engines (Safran’s Arrius 2B2plus and Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PW206B3).

Quietly in its class

As one of the quietest helicopters in its class, the H135’s noise footprint is markedly lower than older-generation helicopters in the same category. This matters most to customers who regularly fly over cities and in densely populated areas, for corporate transportation, emergency medical services and police duties.

Easy to maintain

The H135’s simple design makes maintenance fast and easy, ensuring optimal dispatch reliability and lower operating costs.

The H135 is the benchmark for maintenance costs, thanks to its long inspection intervals, intermediate inspection at 500 flight hours, and periodic inspections every 1,000 hours, or three years.

The H135 has the lowest direct operating cost in its class, making it one of the lowest cost twin-engine helicopters to operate.

Missions

Emergency medical services

The H135 remains a reference in emergency medical services (EMS), available in a wide range of dedicated EMS interiors that maximise operators’ choice in configurations, providing ample room for single-patient or dual-patient transport.

The helicopter’s anti-resonance isolation system (ARIS) ensures each ride is a smooth one.

Search and rescue

The H135 has excellent slope landing capabilities and can perform rapid search and rescue intervention in high-risk situations, such as adverse weather and natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, landslides and heavy snowfalls, etc.)

Private, business and governmental aviation

H135 passengers enjoy an exceptionally fast and smooth ride with extraordinary views.

For high-end passenger transport, Airbus offers the stylish and exclusive Stylence® cabin interior, as well as the comfortable and classic Corporate interior, conducive to getting work done on the go.

The “‘L’Hélicoptère par Hermès” version unites superior taste with advanced engineering and design through Airbus’ collaboration with designers and craftsmen at the luxury goods manufacturer.

Devon Air Ambulance’s H135s: Making a difference when every minute counts

The H135 play a critical medical transport role in the United Kingdom, being well-equipped to meet the specific needs of a medical-based mission. Devon Air Ambulance, a charity-based air ambulance service serving England’s south western county of Devon, has been flying missions since 1992 and purchased its first of two H135s in 2008.

“When we first bought the H135, we asked ourselves how we could best meet the needs of the patient,” says Nigel Hare, operations director at Devon Air Ambulance. “When responding to patients who are in life-threatening situations, it is essential that every aspect of our service provides the very best chance for the patient to survive. Every minute matters, so we need a reliable aircraft that is quick to deploy and has a fast cruise speed so that we can reach the patient and transfer them to hospital quickly, while also being smooth and stable in flight to prevent the patient’s condition from deteriorating,” says Hare. “The additional requirement of having an aircraft with sufficient endurance to enable us to respond to the next patient resulted in us choosing the H135.”

H135 contributes to improving safety

H135 contributes to improving safety for EMS operations in Norway
In Norway, around 700 flights each year cannot be flown due to bad weather and poor visibility. This is about to change with the introduction of new navigational instruments and flight procedures that use satellite-based GPS technology. Known as PROud, this collaborative European project to improve safety in EMS missions. Airbus Helicopters is supporting PROuD with its H135, certified for highly precise instrument landing approaches in difficult terrain and weather. Together with Norwegian Air Ambulance, Airbus Helicopters recently performed impressive test flights with the H135 in June 2015. Watch the video.
