Airbus readies brake to vacate for its A380 introduction

Airports with heavy traffic are constantly striving to increase capacity by reducing the time aircraft spend on the runway after touchdown. A new and innovative system designed to make significant improvements in runway safety, operational efficiency, traffic flow and passenger comfort is on its way for an introduction on the A380 in revenue airline service.

Known as Brake to Vacate (BTV), the new system allows pilots to select the desired runway exit point during the approach for landing, and regulates the aircraft’s deceleration after touchdown – enabling it to reach the chosen exit at the correct speed and under optimum conditions.

No matter the weather or visibility, BTV puts a pilot in command of making the designated runway exit point, resulting in improved turn-around times and providing a significant increase in airport capacity.

Brake to Vacate has gone through a final phase of evaluations, readying the system for its upcoming introduction on the A380 airline revenue service.

Airbus is highlighting the Brake to Vacate concept at the Paris Air Show, and is showcasing a video presentation on its Website.
