| The European REACH chemicals regulation came into force on 1 June 2007. REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals, aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the closer regulation of chemical use by industry. |
 In response to this new legislation, Airbus has produced guidelines along with other European manufacturers such as Renault, Augusta Westland and Rolls-Royce, to assist companies in the mechanical, automotive, aeronautics, space and defence sectors in complying with the requirements.
REACH will introduce a range of obligations over a period of 11 years (up to 2018) which are intended to reduce risk in the management of the 30,000 most frequently used chemicals throughout their lifecycle. The regulation will also bring about the phased withdrawal from use of substances that are considered to be of very high human and environmental concern.
The REACH Interpretation Guidelines have been designed to support successful implementation of the legislation by explaining how to implement the requirements through current commonly accepted interpretations. The major provisions and deadlines of the legislation are illustrated and explained using graphics and flowcharts. |
